From 27 to 29 October 2025 Members of the Committee on Petitions will carry out a fact-finding visit in Madeira (Portugal) following petitions No 1486/2024 on the unavailability of affordable housing in Madeira and No 970/2024 on activating the EU Civil Protection Mechanism for Madeira Wildfires.

Devastating wildfires occur every year in Europe and especially in Portugal, and they significantly affect the most vulnerable groups. Madeira, as an island and remote area, is particularly affected. In this regard, the wildfires and other extreme weather events create major challenges for many economic sectors, in particular the agricultural sector and farmers.

PETI Members consider that the mission will be very helpful in terms of exchanging experiences and improving assistance in case of weather extreme events, described in many petitions sent to PETI Committee.

The visit would also have a meaningful symbolic impact by showing full solidarity and support in person to the affected population, who is suffering the consequences of the devastating wildfires of the summer 2024. The FFV will also explore the issues raised by petitioners as regards housing affordability in Madeira.
