Ever since Russia launched an illegal full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the EU and the Parliament have supported the country by condemning Russia’s aggression, sanctioning those responsible and providing financial and material aid.
Parliament has been urging EU countries to provide political, military and humanitarian assistance to Ukraine. It has also been supportive of Ukraine’s efforts to join the EU.
The timeline is in reverse chronological order, meaning the most recent event will appear on top and the oldest one on the bottom.
MEPs strongly condemn Russia’s ongoing war crimes in Ukraine, expressing firm support for the investigations of the International Criminal Court. The European Parliament's resolution notes that about 16,000 Ukrainian civilians are known to be detained in Russia or in occupied Ukrainian territories, while further 70,000 Ukrainians, including civilians and children, are officially missing.

European Parliament backs extension of EU-Ukraine road transport agreement
MEPs agree to update the EU-Ukraine road transport agreement and to extend it until the end of 2025. Concluded in June 2022, the agreement has facilitated the transport of vital goods such as fuel and humanitarian aid into Ukraine, and has enabled Ukrainian exports such as grain, ore, and steel to reach the EU and beyond.
Parliament approves new tariffs on Russian and Belarussian agricultural goods
MEPs backed increased tariffs on fertilisers and certain Russian and Belarusian agricultural goods, seeking to reduce EU dependency on those imports. This “will help to prevent Russia from using the EU market to finance its war machine” - says standing rapporteur for Russia Inese Vaidere.
The Council adopted the 17th package of measures aiming to cut off Russia’s access to key military technology and curb Russia’s energy revenues that fuel its war of aggression against Ukraine. The package targets Russia’s ‘shadow fleet’ of oil tankers, which are old vessels with unclear ownership, as well as the ships’ operators and a major Russian oil producer.
Members of European Parliament and Verkhovna Rada meet remotely
Committee chairs and others leading Members of the European Parliament and the Verkhovna Rada met to discuss the ongoing cooperation between the two institutions to prepare Ukraine for its future EU accession. The members from both parliaments reaffirmed their strong commitment to Ukraine’s resilience and democracy, and to its European future.
MEPs welcome the proposal for a 30-day ceasefire, agreed between US and Ukraine representatives on 11 March 2025. Parliament says Russia must agree to it and cease all attacks on Ukraine. The EU and its member states must maintain their role as Ukraine’s largest donor and the EU must contribute to robust security guarantees for Ukraine, according to the MEPs.
Parliament calls for lifting all restrictions on the use of weapons by Ukraine
In a resolution on the future of European defence, MEPs say that Europe is facing the most profound military threat to its territorial integrity since the end of the Cold War. Parliament urges the EU to support Ukraine in order to achieve peace and stability in Europe. MEPs call on member states, international partners, and NATO allies to lift all restrictions on the use of Western weapons systems delivered to Ukraine against military targets on Russian territory.
Parliament marks three years of Russia's full-scale invasion
To mark three years of Russia's full-scale invasion, the European Parliament lights up in the colours of the Ukrainian flag. The Presidents of the European Parliament, the Council and the Commission issue a joint statement saying that the future of Ukraine and its citizens lies within the EU. Addressing EU leaders at a summit marking the anniversary, Parliament President Roberta Metsola confirms Parliament's commitment to Ukraine and urges the EU to step up support.
MEPs call for full involvement of Ukraine in peace negotiations
Leading MEPs say that any peace in Ukraine must be just and backed by Ukraine’s people. They also stress that Europe’s security architecture cannot be discussed without the active involvement of the EU and its member states.
Ruslan Stefanchuk, chair of the Ukrainian Verkhovna Rada, addresses a formal sitting of the European Parliament in Strasbourg. In his address, he calls on the EU to continue and increase its support for Ukraine.
