UNOCI: 13 years of peacekeeping in Cote d'Ivoire

by United Nations Peacekeeping

During the thirteen years of its operations, UNOCI protected civilians, enabled inclusive political dialogue and supported the Ivorian Government in the disarmament, demobilization and reintegration (DDR) of former combatants. Through this process, more than 70,000 combatants were disarmed and re-integrated into society, inter-communal conflicts were decreased by 80% and the strengthening of the National Human Rights Commission helped decrease human rights violations by nearly 95%.

The withdrawal of UNOCI illustrates the remarkable progress made by Côte d'Ivoire towards sustainable peace and stability and economic prosperity. The Ivorian administration is now present in all 108 local departments. After a decade of conflict, the commitment and determination of the Ivorian people and national authorities, with the support of UN peacekeeping, made it possible for Côte d’Ivoire to overcome the crisis and fully embark on a path to national reconciliation and social cohesion.
