German aerospace firm Diehl Aviation has inaugurated a facility in Mexico which will supply components including eVTOL parts and overhead luggage bins for the Airbus A220.
Diehl had revealed last year that it would establish a manufacturing site in the country.
It says production at the new facility – located at Santiago de Queretaro, about 170km northwest of Mexico City – will “start shortly”.
Along with A220 bins the company plans, at a “later date”, to supply interior components for the Embraer-linked eVTOL division Eve Air Mobility.
The facility has 20 initial employees but Diehl Aviation expects the workforce to increase, in the medium term, to some 500 personnel.
“This step brings us even closer to our customers in the Americas, enabling faster collaboration, higher efficiency, and greater responsiveness,” says chief executive Jorg Schuler.
The facility is 8,200m² but an expansion is planned to add a further 4,000-6,000m².
“With a total investment in the double-digit million euro range, the new site underlines Diehl Aviation’s long-term commitment to the region,” the company states.
It says its presence in Queretaro brings it into closer proximity with the major airframers – Boeing, Airbus, Embraer and Bombardier – and offers convenience including shorter transport times, and alignment of time zones.
