What is it about?
In machining the disks of pumps and compressors, their end surfaces are deformed. The axial component of the cutting force on the end surface has the greatest influence on the deformation. Its action may be assessed on the basis of elasticity theory.

Why is it important?
Most often, the cutting force is determined from empirical formulas that include a coefficient depending on the tool life. However, some formulas are based on the wear of the tool’s rear surface and the workpiece strength. The strength is determined experimentally. Therefore, empirical formulas may expediently be used to calculate the cutting force. This solution will increase labor productivity.
Perspectives
The proposed approach may be adopted in designing the components of axial compressors and in developing the corresponding manufacturing processes.
