Terms & Conditions for Use of Electronic Resources

Most of the electronic resources, such as journals, books, and databases, in the Libraries' collection are subject to licenses that govern their access and use. If license terms are violated by anyone, access to the resource may be suspended for an individual user or the entire university community. In some cases where a resolution cannot be reached, the publisher may have the right to revoke a license and end our access to the resource permanently. Therefore, we ask all our users to access and download these resources responsibly, to avoid the risk of losing access for the entire university community.

It can be difficult to know what is considered illegal use/access of content. Here are some general guidelines to help you when using NC State University Libraries-licensed resources.

It is generally acceptable to:

  • search, view, and browse these resources
  • make a limited number of print or electronic copies for your personal, educational, or scholarly use
  • use materials for personal, instructional or research needs
  • post links to specific content

It is unacceptable to:

  • make a commercial use of these resources
  • undertake systematic or substantial distribution, printing, copying or downloading (such as entire journal issues or database contents), unless the Libraries has specifically negotiated those rights
  • post actual content (articles or database content) to websites or listservs
  • modify or alter the contents of licensed resources in any way
  • share your Unity ID password with others

In addition, using artificial intelligence (AI) technologies may be prohibited on specific electronic resources platforms. With this, or any other non-standard use, please contact your subject specialist or the Open Knowledge Center for further guidance. For any questions specifically pertaining to copyright and fair use, please contact Will Cross.

Please be aware that users are individually responsible for compliance with these terms. Publishers and/or service providers of electronic resources may collect usage data about individual users and utilize it for the purpose of operating and improving their services and products.
