It depends on the situation—different combinations have their own rationale, and conflicts aren't as intimidating as they may seem. The most concerning issue is our inability to objectively view matters and the intentional overemphasis on certain perspectives. As organizers, it is our responsibility to guide panelists toward a more objective, comprehensive, and in-depth understanding and discussion of topics. Conflict is a natural part of this process, but it also provides us with an opportunity to examine issues from multiple perspectives.

A panel thrives on constructive discussion, not conflict. Diverse views should be shared respectfully, fostering dynamic exchanges. Set clear ground rules, encouraging evidence-based debate while avoiding personal attacks. Assertiveness paired with empathy ensures effective communication and mutual respect. A skilled moderator steers the discussion, redirecting when needed to maintain focus. The goal is a collaborative environment that values differing perspectives without escalating into discord.

One thing I have found helpful is to diligently research each potential panelist..Their educational background, their experiences, their shared thoughts and opinions on matters especially the focus of the panel discussion. Doing this usually gives my team and I insight into how each person will fit into our objective; a rich, vibrant, diverse conversation that deepens understanding and ensures everyone leaves with something to think about.
