To mediate clashes among senior stakeholders, start by clearly defining the core objective of the project: What are we trying to achieve, and how does each stakeholder contribute to this goal? Align everyone around a shared vision that highlights how the project benefits each team while serving the larger purpose. Conflicts often arise when team-specific priorities overshadow collective goals. Hence it's important to always keep the larger goal in mind. Facilitate open dialogue, rely on data-driven insights, and clarify roles and responsibilities. Mediation isn’t just about resolving disagreements—it’s about aligning perspectives and encouraging collaboration to ensure the project moves forward with clarity and purpose.

Clashes among stakeholders for any project is a major challenge for the project team and the organisation. Have the relevant individuals in a session where one restates the project objective: The Why, What, When and Payoff. It is necessary that each stakeholder identify their objectives within this framework and how they contribute. The may perceive a threat to their position, their influence or even their tenure with the organisation. Follow with 1:1 to identify the root causes. Worst case a customer senior manager must get engaged and be a benevolent dictator to drive the project. To quote Mr Spock from Star Trek “The Needs of the Many Outweigh the Needs of the Few”.

When senior stakeholders clash, I focus on finding common ground by facilitating open, respectful discussions and ensuring everyone feels heard. I bring the conversation back to shared goals and use data-driven insights to guide decisions objectively. By staying neutral and solution-oriented, I help align perspectives and build consensus, ensuring the project moves forward with clarity and collaboration.
