We need to help people to understand that processes are always changing and optimizing. No job stays the same over time. The individual needs to have their own goals on what they want to achieve in this life. As a process requires less direct labor to achieve its production result the displaced workers need to look how to contribute in other ways or reflect on what their own goals are. The leadership can offer guidance and possibly training for other roles if that fits with the goals of the organization.

When i’ve introduced automation, I’ve found the biggest factor is being upfront early—no sugarcoating. People want to know how it impacts them, not just how the tech works. I always make time to walk the floor, explain the “why,” and let them ask questions—sometimes tough ones. Then it’s about upskilling the right people and making sure no one feels left behind. You show them there’s a future with them in it—just in a different role. Some folks even end up thriving because automation takes the strain off the repetitive stuff and lets them focus on higher-value work. You can’t automate trust—gotta build that the old-school way.

When automating processes, address employees with transparency, explaining reasons and benefits. Offer training and support for new roles or redeployment. Highlight future opportunities, provide a clear timeline, and encourage open communication. Focus on upskilling, new roles, and business benefits. Early communication, individual meetings, and group sessions help minimize uncertainty and support a smooth transition.

Automation isn’t just a tech upgrade—it’s a human transition. 🤖 When I lead shifts like this, I focus on communication, upskilling, and inclusion from day one. I listen to concerns, clarify the why, and show how roles evolve—not disappear. Cross-training, transparent timelines, and visible support systems turn fear into engagement. Change feels less threatening when people see themselves in the future you’re building. 💡👷♀️

Involve workers from the start to gain early buy-in—when employees co-own solutions, they feel a sense of pride and belonging, making them more likely to support new initiatives. If job security is a concern, prioritize upskilling and support instead of displacement. For example, with an ageing workforce, automation can help employees remain in their roles longer by handling physically demanding tasks. By equipping workers with the skills to leverage technology, we empower them to thrive and adapt, turning challenges into opportunities for growth.
