In fact print production doesn’t rely on the layers and masks, those only a method to create and finalize the graphics and make it easy for editing, it is like building, you need bricks that you place on top of each other to be complete, then you finish by paint and decoration touches, but in the end you are handing over the key 🔑, not the building it self, this is how the design outputs are, after designing you need to understand what is the kind of printing, material and color separation, for example you have to use the layers separately only in the textiles printing, because you need the layer itself to be printed alone, but in the paper printing such as fliers, outdoor ads, etc you need to learn the separate color ratio and Modes.

Usually i create export graphic per layer from Photoshop channel then split into separate files, then convert to grayscale mode, save as lzw compress tif, to minimize the file size and maximize the picture resolution (300 ppi) for print.

PDF is the print format of choice unless you need separations which is rare with the latest printing techniques. Your printer will let you know what formats are needed for the best output.

Personally, I would choose TIFF when layer structure / masks is required for images. File size might’ve been an issue in the past but not that much nowadays. Vector graphic can retain the layer structure if saved as PDF (Acrobat file format 1.5 and higher)
