An improvement requires measurable goals so that each level to be reached has a standard that shows the process is under control in line with the company's goals. With Maturity Levels we are given measurable targets on how to reach a level that continues to provide process improvements.

To align your BPI initiatives with CMMI maturity levels, you need to assess your current process maturity level, define your desired process maturity level, plan your BPI initiatives accordingly, implement, monitor, and evaluate your BPI initiatives, and repeat and refine your BPI initiatives. You can use various methods, such as self-assessment, appraisal, or benchmarking, to evaluate your current process capabilities and gaps. You should also consider the feasibility, benefits, and risks of moving to a higher maturity level, and the resources and commitment required for the transition. Additionally, you need to prioritize and select the processes that need improvement, and choose the appropriate BPI methods and tools, such as Lean, Six Sigma, or Agile, that suit your process context and maturity level. You should also involve and communicate with your stakeholders, collect and analyze data and feedback, and compare your actual process maturity level with your desired level. Finally, you need to continuously review and improve your BPI initiatives, and seek to learn from your successes and failures.

At Levels 4 and 5, the focus shifts to using metrics for performance measurement, process control, and continuous optimization. In one project, we scaled our BPI efforts as we moved up the CMMI ladder, starting with documenting workflows and later using data-driven metrics to drive further improvements. This step-by-step alignment ensured compliance and better process maturity over time.
