OBD stands for On-Board Diagnostics and refers to a computer system installed within a vehicle that monitors and controls the vehicle's performance. Consider a smart watch that can monitor your health at all times. OBD (On Board Diagnostics), as the name suggests is such a system that is constantly monitoring various performance/health parameters of a machine, recording the history, sending out distress signal when needed.

An OBD (On board diagnostics) is where a vehicle can diagnose and report its condition with a various Diagnostics trouble code and internal fault, All this trouble codes and faults are restored from in the electronic control unit(ECU) later with help of OBD protocol a diagnostic device can able to read those trouble codes directly from the vehicle by connecting to it. In current automobile industry OBD-II is the most commonly in used.

To use OBD, you need a scan tool that connect to the OBD port , usually located under the dashboard or near the steering wheel. A scan tool can be a handheld device , a laptop or a smartphone with an adapter. A scan tool can be read clear the codes, display live data, and perfor various test and functions.

With the help of OBD we can check the health of ECU, like inputs and outputs from various modules, sensors to analysis the data and parameters to find out the faulty/malfunction components or related with the components circuits. OBD helps us to isolate and identify the problems by generating related DTC codes to proceed further to fix the problems.

MIL are recorded in current or history in form of predefined codes, OBD tool is attached with car OBD to get the data of DTC which is further decoded through shop manual.

Actually, using an OBD tool isn't that hard for a normal car user, but it is recommended to consult an experienced automotive technician for diagnosis, as tampering with the OBD, being connected to the vehicle, may cause problems in the vehicle. The OBD tool is connected to the OBD port, usually found under the dashboard, for most cars, it is under the steering section. Turn on the ignition but not the engine. The OBD tool mostly will turn on automatically; there will be a manual on how to use the OBD tool. Most importantly, it is mandatory to use authentic OBD tools, as there are a lot of cheap tools available in the market. The original OBD tools are a bit expensive and require a license.

All of these are common with a 16 pin OBD connector which can be connected to to OBD port of the vehicle (usually located under the dashboard). OBD-II scanner allows you to read trouble codes present in ECU. where as Diagnostic testers allows you to read trouble codes with description, perform routine services and also download the softwares wrt ECU, especially designed for the OEMs and can differ from OEM to OEM.

When using OBD a sixteen pin device connect to a vehicle dashboard near steering (in most cases) called DLC (Diagnostic Link Connector). Then start ignition but donot turn on an engine. The OBD scanner is linking to a vehicle Engine Control Module to establishing a connection. Then enter vehicle identification number, engine model. Search for codes into the scanner menu of a code section which comprises of Active/Pending codes.

Using the proper diagnostic Scanner is the first step to correctly pinpoint OBD issue. With the proper device you can observe live data for Emission codes to determine whether the problem is electrical or mechanical. Something as simple as a vacuum leak can cause a lot of misleading OBD codes. Training and in the field experience is a valuable asset to have in cases like this. A vacuum leak on a 4wheel drive accuator can lead to replacing Oxygen sensors, Airflow meters and other components if not completely diagnosed and pinpoint tested. This day and age proper equipment and tools isn’t enough, training is crucial.

Understanding the OBD codes is necessary to see the fault present in vehicle. It is Structured in alphanumeric pattern for example P0XXX where "P" states for powertrain like wise "C" for chasis, "U" for network/wiring and "B" for body. By understanding the initial letter we can identify which part of the vehicle should be diagnosed. Eg. C0502 - Front left wheel speed sensor-Circuit open. P0115 - Engine coolant temperature sensor signal invalid. (1st letter confirms the system/2nd,3rd and 4th number confirms subsystem/5th number confirms the specific accuracy) Almost all kind of trouble codes are available on the internet and the DTC Matrix.

The first character is a letter, while the remaining four are numbers. The first character indicates the system or area of the vehicle where the problem is located. For example, “P” stands for powertrain, “C” for chassis, “B” for body, and “U” for network communication.

Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) cosist of 5 letters when you connect your OBD scanner 16 pin to your dashboard steering side near to it called DLC (Diagnostic Link Connector). First start the ignition but donot start the engine then OBD scanner gives you a set of codes Active/pending. The first letter denote the particular section of the vehicle where it gives problem if it start with P means powertrain , C means chassis, B means body etc. Second letter denotes that problem is generic or manufacturers point of view. Third letter gives more precise information that in particular section of vehicle several components are attached so which is actually causing trouble. The final two characters shows the exact fault.

1-Find the diagnostic port on your vehicle. 2-Connect your scanner or OBD2 code reader to the diagnostic port. 3. Insert the key into the "ON" position on your vehicle's ignition. 4-Activate the diagnostic instrument. 5-Retrieve any DTCs by following the tool's on-screen instructions.

Troubleshooting OBD codes is finding the root cause of the issue and do the remedy for it. OBD states issue by the means of trouble codes after reading, it defines the precise cause of issue. Certain guidelines to be followed for each diagnostics using service manuals For example if DTC states wheel speed sensor issue. 1] Try to replace the sensor and check (Part conformity) 2] Try to replace the encoder which is used to track wheel rotation. 3]Check for the connector end pinouts/backouts/loose connection. 4] Check for the continuity from wiring harness from wheel speed sensor to respective components (ABS/ESP). After finding the cause and correction give the vehicle a drive for self healing the DTC and Clear via OBD-II

Remember that OBD faults have a life cycle that is more complex than active or inactive. If you don’t have a tool that can clear codes and you believe you have made a repair, you likely need to have several driving cycles before the fault will be cleared. A simple example, is a loose gas cap. After tightening the cap you will need to drive the vehicle long enough for the OBD monitor to be triggered and detect the system is now operating correctly.

Obd 2 ist ein gutes und geschätztes System. Allerdings nimmt die Vernetzung der Systeme inzwischen Dimensionen an, die hier zu Problemen führen, da die Zusammenhänge für die Anwender in den Werkstätten und auch privat teilweise nicht mehr nachvollziehbar sind. Woran es hier mangelt, bleibt zu hinterfragen. Die Kultur des massiven Einsatzes von Steuergeräten sollte hinterfragt werden. Hinter dem Einsatz von CarPc's steckt ein erhebliches Verbesserungspotential, da es heute möglich ist, für fast jedes Bauteil einen eindeutigen und unverwechselbaren Code zu hinterlegen, der bei Analysen direkt zur Fehlerlokalisierung oder -identifikation führt.

Um exemplo é um motor fora de sincronismo da correia dentada onde o código extraído estaria relacionado ao sensor de fase, sua substituição não resolveria o problema pois o motor continuaria fora de sincronismo.
