Often times IT teams are in a time crunch to deploy a new application or instance and don’t have the bandwidth to assess the necessary ports and protocols to provide least privilege. Besides all the security risks that can come from outside the EC2 instance itself (like insecure API's, inadequate network security groups, IAM privledges, etc.), lack of timely patching, encryption, and data managment practices that avoid sensitive data being in an unsecured state on the server and some of the top issues that come to mind. As with all things security, all the 'links' in the security chain have to be managed appropriately to have effective security outcomes. Leave anything out and it doesn't matter how much the rest is 'gold plated'.

Weak or leaked credentials is not just peculiar to AWS EC2 instance but to anything. In case of AWS EC2 to manage credentials it's best to follow best practices and guidelines, all secret and credentials should be managed by a secret manager using services like AWS secret manager, AWS certificate manager or external tools like Hashicorp Vaults etc. Key rotation should be adopted, for accessing the instance the . PEM or .PPK file should be given read only permission and be shared with only authorised user. Log files, configuration files should be treated as secrets and encrypted before sharing to any third party tool or application. Constant auditing should be conducted to evaluate the security posture of the instance.

Weak or easily guessable passwords make it easier for attackers to gain unauthorized access to EC2 instances. Simple passwords or those based on common dictionary words are especially vulnerable.

Adding an MFA, passkey or biometric login support as part of your authentication process will significantly reduce the chance of someone accessing your services in this manner. Use of passwords alone will always leave an opportunity for those to be leaked.

It’s important to use a strong and unique password for each AWS account. Additionally, you should also use two-factor authentication (2FA) to help protect your account from unauthorized access.

Passwords follow the third law of thermodynamics, everything seeks the state with the lowest energy. In the same way that the natural state of a bomb is exploded, the natural state of a password is "leaked". It is only a matter of time before it happens so having well established protocols to deal with and detect leaked credentials is very important. Unlike a bomb, when a password reaches it's natural state, you probably are not going to notice so you have to watch. Stronger passwords don't reduce the likelihood of a "leak", they only delay cracking leaked hashes and increase active cracking times. Monitoring the behaviour of account logins, multi-factor authentication, and using the principle of least privilege are your best defences

Unpatched or outdated software can pose security threats and this can be exploited by attackers, unpatched or outdated software can be from the OS, installed software, applications, libraries etc. Using configuration management tools like Ansible makes this easy to patch and update software, using scripts can also be implemented to automate this process. Have an Ansible playbook that has your your server configuration, this playbook should be tasked to update and patch all software to the latest or required version depending on the specific needs for requirements. Then a script can be developed to run this playbook periodically and cronjob can be set from this script to always run periodically for instance every 3 months.

Running outdated operating systems or software on EC2 instances can leave them vulnerable to known exploits. Moreover, failing to apply security patches and updates in timely manner can expose instances to vulnerabilities!

I usually think of insecure network connections in the same way as misconfigured access. When we think about identities we have a tendency to think about, accounts. In my logic a network interface is an identity in itself. You then have to build a map paring which identities are allowed to communicate with each other, and in which context. The rules you put in place should echo those identity contextual pairs. Even done perfectly, you still need to watch for pair communications out of known and expected patterns.

To secure your networks again you should use aws network solution so that if in case any glitch on your network you can have proper end to end support from aws. For securing the network only use private ips and if in case you need any kind of network connection use nat gateway solutions for your privately configured ips. Secure your network in each step for example nacl security for subnet level, workload security on security group level. Internet security on igw level and only allow the routes according to your requirements, do not allow any traffic which you are not aware of.

Implement AWS CloudWatch to collect & analyze logs, establishing comprehensive metrics for system performance & security events. Configure CloudWatch Alarms to receive notifications for abnormalities. Use AWS CloudTrail to monitor API calls, providing a detailed history of AWS resource usage. As a risk and continuous improvement geek, I may be a little biased with this one. Monitoring is the key to reducing a lot of stress from a CISOs life. It also requires that you know what you are monitoring. AS systems, and products are implemented key risk indicators should be defined as an integral part of design. Knowing the expected communications patterns, access patterns means you can look and block pattern variance. Looking at it again from a discrete identify perspective identities such as CPU, disk, network and memory usage should be included in your monitoring protocols. You may find good indication of a breach through out of pattern CPU spikes before you see attempts at data exfiltration.

Detailed monitoring is always available on premises setup. Being charged for every component that doesnot cost a thing puts off many companies. This could also have a detrimental effect on actually monitoring and security. Aws should try to make free what it can in the greater interest and larger good. Many companies have moved their workload due to such factors.

The correct monitoring and logging will give the safe guard to your workload running on AWS cloud. Try to use inbuilt aws services like cloudwatch and trail for monitoring and logging. You can enhance it by using splunk and new relics. Rather to use any third party solutions so that if any such incident occurs in your environment you can have aws support available in every situation because aws clearly tells that they only provide support for their services not for third party solutions which organizations opt for.

Know Thyself. If you are running headlong into cloud wielding an axe and a keyboard holding up a battle-scarred "Agile" flag you are essentially designing the next legacy headache. Agile Manifesto does not negate documentation or thorough design, it prioritises the efforts to release product. I'm not saying write a 100 page instruction manual before you code but you at the very least have to know what you have done, what components are involved, how it works and what user journeys are expected before you go live.
