    There are few techniques which can help in identifying anomalies like, data validation checks, Statistical analysis and use of few quality tools. We can mitigate these anomalies by - correcting or removing invalid test data - Rethink and create realistic test data - Ensure that new set of test data is from right source - Implement process to monitor the data

    When QA test data throws unexpected anomalies, don’t just fix them—understand them. For me, recreating the issue in isolation often works best. Strip it down—minimal test data, controlled environment—see if the anomaly persists. If it does, it's real. If not, external factors are at play. Most importantly, look at it from a fresh perspective. Take a break, revisit, and sometimes, the root cause reveals itself in the simplest details. QA isn’t just about testing—it’s about questioning everything.

    A quick and effective approach: • First, I identify where the problem occurs and repeat the test a few times. • Next, I gather evidence and resources identified during the tests. • Then, I open the issue. • I reach out to the developer involved in creating the functionality, and we work together to solve the problem. In some cases, the involvement of other team members, such as DevOps, is necessary.

    Apart from review of external factors and patterns, it is also important to repeat the test to establish whether it is a genuine anomaly or not. Once the anomaly has been ascertained then it would be worthwhile to look at the historical data and see trends. Sometimes it also helps to check if there were changes in the systems that had gone undetected or deemed low risk initially. These include change of source, personnel, method, calibration, instrument or any other associated factor. These would form the baseline of a quality investigation which would produce concrete output in terms of root cause when discussed or brainstormed with the wider group.

    I find the following approach useful in resolving QA data anomalies: 1. Identify & Define – Determine the nature, scope, and impact of the discrepancy. 2. Validate Data – Cross-check sources, review integrity, and confirm accuracy. 3. Root Cause Analysis – Use 5 Whys, Fishbone Diagram, or Data Flow Analysis to pinpoint the cause. 4. Correct & Improve – Fix errors, enhance processes, recalibrate tools, or retrain staff. 5. Prevent Recurrence – Implement automation, SOP updates, and continuous monitoring. 6. Monitor & Document – Track improvements, document findings, and ensure compliance.

    There is a simple methodology I follow in similar situation: 1. Identify the anomalies. 2. Compare the current data with historical data. 3. Ensure the data showing anomalies are coming from a verified channel. 4. At times data collection methods may need to be audited. 5. One can use one of the many RCA methods widespread in our industry. 6. Upon identifying the root cause, take action to correct the anomalies identified. 7. After corrective actions, we also need to put preventative measures in place to ensure reoccurrence of such anomalies does not take place. 8. Maintain a proper log of the communications involved. This is one of the systematic approaches one can adopt in case of unexpected anomalies occurrence in quality assurance.

    My approach will be- 1. Understand the anomaly if it is occurring due to test data , test environment or if it is a defect. 2. Check if the environment is up to date and in sync with the production environment. 3. Try to reproduce the issue using different test data and different environments if possible. 4. Correct the test data if it is a problem with data else log a defect and collaborate with Dev team and BA. 5. Fix the test data or retest the defect if a fix is provided. 6. Validate the fix.
