To adjust your communication style, you need to first understand who is in your team. This is so that you would know how to communicate with them. You need to then use jargons that are commonly used by experts in that field. This is to make them understand you easily. You need to also ask them for feedback and questions. This is to see if they are able to understand you or not.

Adjusting communication style for diverse expertise levels requires clarity and adaptability. For beginners, I simplify concepts, use relatable examples, and provide step-by-step guidance. For experienced members, I keep discussions concise, focus on strategic insights, and encourage collaboration. Active listening and feedback help ensure everyone stays aligned while fostering a supportive learning environment.

What I have found very important is 'know your audience.' You impress no one by speaking over the heads of your audience with large high-sounding words or speaking down to your audience as if they are not educated enough to understand you. Find common ground and if you use a PowerPoint presentation let them know up front you will provide it to anyone who asks you for a copy and you are not there to read it to them. They should pay attention to what you are saying and not to read it during your presentation. Oh, and please don't use different fonts and calligraphy on your slide's death by PowerPoint is fun for no one. Get down on their level they will put their phones down and engage you and really appreciate it.

Style adjustment varies according to different audiences in different communicative practices and settings . This is often done in keeping with three important factors ; field, tenor and mode. Field belongs to the nature of subject being dealt and tenor refers to the nature of participants involved while mode means verbal or written channel of communication . Best example I could relate how Karan Thapar interviews experts , celebrities or statesman changing the forms of address ,either Mr. or by addressing first name to maintain the communication on equal footing . His timely interruptions also that fits into that particular genre or speech act for clarifying doubts.

Be cognisant of the fact that different people with diverse expertise levels have different levels of comprehension and different ways of contributing to the team at the end of the day. Remind yourself that one person is not necessarily better than another just because he/she is perceived to be more knowledgeable or stronger in a specific area. Find out what are everybody’s strengths which will help you have better awareness which aspect each person is skewed towards. This will allow you to pitch your communication and writing in a more customised way towards different people with different levels of expertise. There will be a lower tendency for you to subconsciously feel that certain people are lacking in expertise or competency too.

    1. Always begin by acknowledging the wealth of experience available in the room. From seasoned experts to fresh perspectives, they all play a role. 2. Use Inclusive Language Avoid jargon that might alienate less experienced members, while still engaging senior professionals. 3. Encourage Knowledge Sharing Promote mentorship and cross-level learning. 4. Define roles while keeping dialogue respectful and affirmative. 5. Encourage collaboration and remind your team of the vision and mission of the organisation so they know they are part of something big and meaningful.

I believe effective communication in a diverse team comes down to honesty, adaptability, and problem-solving. I make sure to adjust my language to the level the person can understand while ensuring clarity and inclusivity. Beyond that, I focus on truly understanding what they can deliver. If gaps exist, I work with them to find a Plan B or Plan C—exploring solutions rather than just pointing out limitations. Open conversations about challenges help create a supportive environment where everyone can contribute effectively.
