When Cuts to Special Education Become Cuts to Opportunity As recent moves within the Department of Education signal staffing and budget reductions, it’s important to pause and consider what’s at stake, especially for students with disabilities who depend on federal support and oversight. What’s happening? The Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services (OSERS) is reported to be severely impacted by recent rounds of reductions in force These cuts come against a backdrop of already constrained federal education funding, with billions in allocations to key K–12 programs remaining unreleased or threatened. The Department had previously announced that nearly half of its workforce would be cut back in an earlier reorganization. U.S. Department of Education 📚 Why this matters for special education students The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) hinges on federal oversight and enforcement. Without sufficient staff, states may face less accountability and more flexibility to reduce services. Local districts often rely on federal and Medicaid reimbursements to sustain services like occupational therapy, speech therapy, assistive technology, or mental health supports. Cuts could push costs onto school districts that are already stretched thin. Disparities between wealthy and under-resourced districts could widen. When oversight or funding gaps emerge, some students may lose access to the supports they need. In large districts, we are already seeing evidence that reductions in special education staffing or funding lead to missed services, unmet IEPs, and increased burden on teachers and families. ✅ What we can do Stay informed: Monitoring how these structural changes unfold will be crucial. Elevate voices: Encourage stakeholders—educators, administrators, parents—to share data and stories about how cuts are affecting real students. Advocate for minimum standards: Ensure any changes still preserve the guarantees of IDEA, maintaining due process, accountability, and enforcement mechanisms. Support local efforts: Many districts may need to find creative partnerships, reallocate resources, or seek alternative funding streams to preserve support services. #autism #specialeducation #autismadvocate #departmentofeducation #autismawareness #specialneedsadvocate #inclusion #iep #specialneeds

The Impact of Eliminating DEI Efforts in the Workforce on Neurodivergent Individuals While the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) provides important protections for neurodivergent individuals, eliminating Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) efforts in the workforce could still have significant negative effects. Reduced Access & Accommodations: DEI initiatives help ensure that workplaces are accessible, offering accommodations like sensory-friendly spaces and flexible work arrangements that are essential for neurodivergent individuals to succeed. Increased Social Isolation: Without DEI, neurodivergent individuals may experience more social isolation in the workplace. These initiatives foster cultures of respect and inclusion, reducing stigma and improving social interactions. Mental Health Strain: The lack of DEI could exacerbate mental health challenges for neurodivergent individuals by limiting access to supportive environments, leading to increased stress and anxiety. Employment Barriers: DEI promotes equal opportunities in the workplace. Without it, neurodivergent individuals could face higher barriers to accessing job opportunities, career advancement, and supportive work environments. Legal Protections Are Not Enough: While the ADA provides legal safeguards, DEI initiatives complement these protections by taking proactive measures to create inclusive, welcoming work environments. The ADA offers vital protections, but DEI efforts play a crucial role in ensuring real, everyday access and inclusion in the workforce. Removing them could reverse the progress we've made toward a more equitable work environment for neurodivergent individuals. Let's continue advocating for inclusive workspaces. Support DEI initiatives to ensure neurodivergent individuals have the equal opportunities they deserve. Share your thoughts and experiences—together, we can create lasting change. #Neurodiversity #Inclusion #DisabilityRights #DEI #ADA #WorkplaceInclusion #MentalHealthAwareness #Neurodivergent

5 Lessons I’ve Learned Since Founding 5-Eleven Hoops and Working with Neurodivergent Individuals that Society Should Embrace Since founding 5-Eleven Hoops, I’ve had the privilege of working closely with neurodivergent individuals, and it has been one of the most transformative experiences of my life. Each day, I see how small changes in understanding can make a huge impact. Here are five lessons that I believe society can and should adopt to create a more inclusive world: Communication is Unique Communication isn’t one-size-fits-all. I’ve learned to listen beyond words—to body language, music, rhythms, and even shared silence. Respecting and adapting to each person’s unique communication style is key to understanding one another. Celebrating Small Victories Milestones that might seem minor to some are monumental for others. Celebrating small victories—whether it’s tying a shoe or completing a task—brings joy and reinforces growth. Society should learn to recognize and honor these moments, regardless of their size. Empathy Over Assumptions Neurodivergence isn’t something to “fix” but to understand and support. Rather than making assumptions, we need to approach each person with empathy and an open mind. This mindset shift allows for more genuine connections. Patience is a Superpower Building patience isn’t always easy, but it’s essential. Neurodivergent individuals often operate on their own timelines, and that’s perfectly okay. Being patient fosters a more supportive environment where everyone can thrive at their own pace. Strength in Diversity Neurodivergence brings unique perspectives, strengths, and creativity. These qualities should be celebrated and integrated into every part of society. Diverse minds drive innovation, empathy, and understanding—qualities we need now more than ever. If we can adopt these lessons, we’ll create spaces where every individual feels valued and understood. Let’s continue building a more inclusive world, together. 💙 #Neurodiversity #Inclusion #Empathy #Patience #CelebrateDifferences #5ElevenHoops #AutismAwareness
