🌿 A new chapter for #accountability I still remember sitting in the basement of the World Economic Forum during Covid in August 2019, talking about how we could close the gap between corporate commitments and real change for nature. A few months later, in April 2020, we brought together over 200 stakeholders for a week-long virtual workshop to explore what accountability really means, and how we might serve as the connective tissue in a sometimes confusing landscape. That seed became the Accountability Accelerator, one of the original components of the Global Commons Alliance, and over the past four years, it has grown from a start-up idea into a funder, convener, and thought partner helping to build a just and impactful accountability ecosystem for nature. Today, we’re marking an important milestone: the Accelerator is now independent, while remaining a proud and connected member of the GCA family. This independence gives us the flexibility to deepen our catalytic role: getting small but strategic funds to projects in both the Global South and Global North, and helping link the many actors working toward the same goal of enabling accountability for corporate impacts on nature. At a time when regulations are being rolled back in parts of the US and Europe, accountability for corporate action is more vital than ever. Companies that stay true to their commitments need recognition and support—and those that retreat must face real consequences. I’m very proud of how far we’ve come, and even more hopeful about what’s ahead. The need for accountability isn’t going away; it’s growing. 📢 A new era of collaboration As one of five original components of the Global Commons Alliance, the Accountability Accelerator is proud to have worked as part of this Alliance for the past four years alongside other entities working to protect and restore our global commons. In this time, we have grown from a start-up initiative into a funder, thought leader, and ecosystem-builder that in 2024 awarded over $2 million in strategic grants, convened more than 300 stakeholders across 20 counties, and launched the first validation service for science-based targets for nature. Now, we mark the start of a new era of collaboration with the Global Commons Alliance, which is evolving to become a holistic alliance comprising more diverse actors with the shared mission to safeguard and restore Earth’s life-support systems, equitably, now. To participate in the initiative, companies indicate: 🔢 their next step toward science-based targets for nature, and  📅 the timeline on which they aim to submit it for independent validation through the Accountability Accelerator 💡Credible action can start with a focused scope: SBTN’s accelerated pathways help companies get started with flexible entry points, helping more companies step up for nature sooner. ⭐ As the independent validation host for science-based targets for nature, the Accountability Accelerator is pleased to offer the first 25 companies to submit a milestone for validation through the Step Up for Nature initiative a 50% reduction in validation service fees. This is possible with the support of our consulting partners EBP and Etifor | Valuing Nature.
