Deadly clashes between the West Papua National Liberation Army (TPNPB) and Indonesian forces surged in October, driving Papua’s conflict death toll to its highest monthly level this year. ACLED records at least 22 people killed — including civilians — across Highland, Central, and West #Papua, following coordinated military operations launched earlier in the month. Among those killed was senior TPNPB commander Lamek Alipky Taplo, who died during an offensive on his base in Kiwirok on 19 October. His death could shift the group’s dynamics, with TPNPB factions vowing to keep fighting as the military braces for retaliation. ICE’s aggressive nationwide migration crackdown has turned some of its facilities into regular sites of confrontation with demonstrators. Since 9 September, ICE has made over 1,500 arrests as part of Operation Midway Blitz in #Chicago and elsewhere in Illinois. Nearly 30 demonstrations have taken place at the Broadview ICE facility, with law enforcement intervening in over half. A #Portland ICE facility has also seen sustained anti-ICE demonstrations — at least 24 in October alone, with law enforcement intervening in at least 14. The Trump administration has cited the recurring unrest, which forced the facility to close for 22 days over the summer, in its continued push to deploy National Guard troops. Islamic State Mozambique (ISM) is sustaining an expanded operational reach across Cabo Delgado. While activity remained concentrated in northern districts like Palma and Mocímboa da Praia, incidents also extended south into Balama and Montepuez along the Lúrio river — well beyond ISM’s traditional Muidumbe–Macomia heartland. This broader geographic pattern highlights the group’s resilience. Operating in smaller groups that enhance their mobility, ISM has increased activity since 2024 and maintained that intensity into 2025, stretching security forces as operations spread across a wider territory. As the Arakan Army (AA) tightens control over Rakhine state in #Myanmar, it has expanded operations into neighboring regions to consolidate gains and preempt future threats. By advancing east of the Rakhine mountains along key overland routes, the AA is disrupting military supply lines and threatening weapons production infrastructure, including Weapons Factory No. 14 in Magway. This expansion has also transformed Ayeyarwady region into an active conflict zone, with more than 300 violent events already recorded by ACLED in 2025, compared to no more than five per year before the 2021 coup. The AA’s push into the region brings Pathein — home to the southwestern regional military command and a local airport — within striking distance. Russian forces carried out coordinated drone and missile strikes on key power substations in the Khmelnytskyi and Mykolaiv regions, disrupting electricity supply across Ukraine. On 30 October, the blackouts cut power to the Khmelnytskyi and South Ukraine nuclear plants and forced output reductions at the Rivne facility — raising nuclear safety concerns. In response, Ukrainian drones and missiles hit power infrastructure in the Vladimir, Bryansk, and Oryol regions, causing widespread blackouts and highlighting vulnerabilities in Russia’s own energy supply. Meanwhile, both sides appear to be adhering to the IAEA-brokered ceasefire around the Russia-occupied Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant. A year after the Novi Sad station collapse that killed 16 people, anti-corruption protests in #Serbia continue to gain momentum. ACLED data shows that violent “interventions” by authorities have doubled since June. A new The Observer UK report details how tens of thousands traveled to Novi Sad for a mass commemoration with students emerging as key actors. 🗣️ “I’m genuinely surprised by the length and intensity of the movement,” said Magda Anastasijevic, ACLED’s Eastern Europe Research Manager. Protesters are calling for accountability and proposing independent experts to lead a technocratic government tackling corruption. 🔗 Read the full article: https://lnkd.in/dJQpNYYi

Insurgent activity continued in Muidumbe district, where militants attacked security forces, targeted civilians, and disrupted traffic on the N380 highway. On 21 October, Islamic State Mozambique (ISM) ambushed a police convoy near Xitaxi village, killing the driver of the lead vehicle with a rocket-propelled grenade and halting traffic for several hours. The attack sparked panic in nearby villages, with some residents fleeing. Days later, five fishermen were captured and beheaded near Nguri Lagoon, prompting reported Defense and Security Forces bombardments targeting insurgent positions as ISM sustains its presence in the area. Once seen as a minor player in Myanmar’s decades-long civil war, the Arakan Army (AA) has become one of the most formidable resistance forces in post-coup #Myanmar — and the most active ethnic armed organization in ACLED’s database. This transformation has been driven by the expansion of its military capacity, a clear political vision that resonates with local populations, and its pragmatic positioning within the wider movement resisting central military rule. ACLED data show the AA’s presence expanded significantly from 2015 onward, as it pushed from southern Chin and northeastern #Rakhine into central parts of the state. Since the 2021 coup, it has rapidly extended control across western Myanmar — including much of Rakhine and Paletwa township — emerging as the dominant armed actor in a region long contested by the military. Donald Trump says Islamist militants in #Nigeria are killing Christians — and has called for US military action. But conflict data shows the violence is far more complex. Since Islamist insurgency escalated nearly 16 years ago, about 52,000 civilians have been killed across all faiths and causes — challenging claims of “100,000 Christian deaths.” 🎥 Watch the latest ACLED Briefed for the newest developments.

The war on drugs in the #Philippines has continued under President Marcos Jr., despite promises of a “bloodless” approach. ACLED records at least 492 drug war-related civilian deaths up to 10 October 2025 — with levels of violence comparable to Duterte’s final months in office. New patterns are emerging: Central Visayas has become the center of gravity of violence, with police as the main perpetrators alongside anti-drug vigilantes, and a rising share of violent activity by armed drug suspects. The Duterte-era Oplan Double Barrel — the operational plan that put Duterte’s war on drugs into action — remains in force under Marcos, even as a political divorce between the Marcoses and the Dutertes has taken shape.
