Building the public and political will to end hunger in the United States and around the world.
About us
The Alliance to End Hunger engages diverse institutions to build the public and political will to end hunger at home and abroad. WHO WE ARE The Alliance to End Hunger develops innovative partnerships among our members; political commitment among our leaders; and global connections among groups working to end hunger worldwide. The Alliance has more than 85 members--corporations, non-profits, universities, individuals, and faith-based organizations. OUR APPROACH • Foster Strategic Partnerships: We initiate partnerships among our members that expand their efforts to benefit the hungry people they serve. By establishing connections between members, we facilitate collaboration on the most effective solutions to combat hunger. • Building Political Commitment: We elevate hunger on the national agenda by encouraging our political leaders to advocate on behalf of poor and hungry people. Alliance members work together to urge leaders in Congress to use their political power to influence policy on both the national and international level. • Hunger Free Communities Initiative: Through establishment of the Hunger Free Communities Initiative, we convene diverse community-led coalitions and support their work to better understand hunger within their communities. This initiative facilitates the start-up process, connects coalitions with members of Congress and other elected officials, initiates communication among groups, shares best practices, and supports the USDA Hunger Free Communities grant program in Congress. • The National Alliance Partnership Program (NAPP): The NAPP initiative provides capacity building for Alliance organizations in six developing countries: Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Malawi, and one Latin American/Caribbean country (TBA). Following a grant by the International Fund for Agricultural Development, the Alliance has received additional funding to continue work through 2016.

This week we had a great discussion on challenges faced and potential solutions to food access in rural areas across the country. The virtual conversation features valuable insights and ideas from Sodexo Stop Hunger Foundation, Meals on Wheels America, Bread for the World, Auburn University/Hunger Solutions Institute, Arkansas Hunger Relief Alliance, Share Our Strength, The Wright Group-Food & Beverage Solutions, Save the Children US, DMARC (Des Moines Area Religious Council) and others. Congressman Shomari Figures offered wonderful insights of his own to lead things off, including how important it is to ensure food insecure families and individuals as well as local economies are not left behind. There was a ton of interest in getting the group back together in the future to promote next steps. A huge "thank you" to everyone who made this possible!

It is National School Lunch Week! The school year is in full swing across the country, and approximately 30 million school-aged children are lining up in cafeterias each day to eat a school-provided lunch. However, not all students have equal access to school meals (or the interest in eating them). On our latest episode of Voices to End Hunger, Minerva Delgado speaks with Abbie Watts of Community Food Advocates of NYC. They discuss CFA’s solutions to both issues of school meals access and appeal in New York, as well as NY’s journey to “Universal School Meals." On this #WorldFoodDay, the Alliance to End Hunger wants to recognize all the advocates, organizations, businessowners, farmers, researchers, federal workers, parents, educators, neighbors, community leaders, and oh so many more who are working tirelessly to bring our towns, cities, and nations a little bit closer to a #ZeroHunger World. This year has been a difficult one for people and families struggling with hunger and malnutrition in the United States and globally, and our mission is far from over; but the partnerships we continue to build and the support we continue to offer one another can make our dream of a hunger free world a reality. Thank you!

Minerva Delgado with some final thoughts on last week's Hunger Free Communities West/Southwest Regional Convening in Phoenix, Arizona. These convenings have been a fantastic way to meet with dedicated and passionate hunger-fighters from across the country. Their leadership and determination in the face of so many obstacles is nothing short of inspiring.

It's National School Lunch Week! One way we’re commemorating this event this year is by enrolling in “America’s Child Nutrition Programs,” a new online course offered by the Congressional Hunger Center. In five lessons, you’ll discover the most effective federal programs that keep America’s children fed, like the National School Lunch Program and School Breakfast Program, as well as how they work and how they came to be. The course is free and open to the public at www.zerohungeracademy.org. Join us and hunger advocates across the country and sign up today! #zerohungeracademy #childnutrition #schoolmeals

Wrapping up a fantastic Hunger Free Communities Network regional convening! Friends and partners came from all over the West and Southwest regions of the country to share ideas and insights on our collective work to end hunger everywhere for everyone. These conversations are so incredibly important, especially at a time when there is so much change and uncertainty. We shared and learned about: 🔹 How the shutdown and recent changes to SNAP and other nutrition programs are impacting local food security efforts 🔹 How local coalitions are working to spread and raise the profile of hunger and nutrition issues to elected officials and diverse constituencies 🔹 Linkages between federal nutrition programs, local economies, agriculture, schools, and so many other local interests 🔹 How we can continue to build our local and national partnerships to ensure that food and nutrition are given the attention they deserve at the local, state, and national level. Huge thanks to Instacart for making these convenings possible; also the Arizona Food Bank Network, WHEAT, and the Lutheran Advocacy Ministry AZ. Finally, a big thanks to Kelvin Beachum of the Arizona Cardinals for his continuing support and advocacy. And of course, First Church UCC in Phoenix for opening up their doors for our gathering. Thank you to everyone who came out for this wonderful event!
