We Are Their Voice.

About us

The ASPCA (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) is the first animal welfare organization established in North America and serves as the nation’s leading voice for animals. The organization’s mission is to provide effective means for the prevention of cruelty to animals throughout the United States. The ASPCA provides local and national leadership in three key areas: protecting and rescuing animals from crisis, assisting animals in communities and advancing legal protection for animals. The ASPCA was founded by Henry Bergh in 1866 on the belief that animals are entitled to kind and respectful treatment at the hands of humans, and must be protected under the law. Headquartered in New York City, the ASPCA maintains a full-service animal hospital, spay/neuter clinic, rehabilitation center for canine victims of cruelty, kitten nursery and adoption facility. In addition, the ASPCA announced a groundbreaking anti-cruelty partnership with the New York Police Department in 2013, which has resulted in a record-breaking number of arrests and animals’ lives saved. The ASPCA also operates programs and services that extend nationwide, including a Field Investigation and Response team that rescues animal victims of natural and man-made disasters, a fully-subsidized spay/neuter clinic in Los Angeles, a Behavioral Rehabilitation Center for fearful, under-socialized dogs, and a 24-hour, 365-day Animal Poison Control Center that provides pet owners and veterinarians with live, on-call assistance related to toxic products and substances. In 2015, the ASPCA acquired Humane Alliance, the nation’s leading training and education organization focusing on high-quality, high-volume spay/neuter. The ASPCA is a privately funded 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization supported by more than 2 million animal advocates across the country.

🚨RESCUED🚨More than 50 Dogs and Puppies Living in Extremely Poor Conditions  At the request of the Berkeley County Sheriff's Office, the ASPCA assisted in rescuing more than 50 dogs, including puppies, from a property in Berkeley County, South Carolina. The animals were found living in extremely poor conditions. Some were found to be malnourished and dehydrated or suffering from other untreated medical conditions, and four dogs were in such critical condition that they required immediate emergency veterinary care. Most of the dogs on the property were confined to dilapidated wooden kennels saturated with urine and heavily soiled with feces. Some also had scarring consistent with dogfighting, and dogfighting paraphernalia was found on scene, including a treadmill, medications and supplements, and a breeding stand. The dogs will be transported to an ASPCA recovery center where they will receive forensic veterinary examinations, medical treatment, and behavioral care and enrichment. While we provide ongoing care for the rescued animals, we need your support. Please make a lifesaving gift today to help us reach more animals like these.🧡 aspca.org/SCdogrescue

One of the largest puppy-selling websites claims to work only with "responsible, ethical breeders," using phrases like "star breeder" and "small operation" to describe where their pups come from. Here’s the truth❗ Take Royal (pictured), for example. He's advertised as coming from a "star breeder" running a "small operation" with her mother. The truth? Royal comes from a large commercial breeding facility in Oklahoma with over 180 dogs. Just weeks after Royal and his littermates were born and listed for thousands of dollars each, their mother was put up for sale at a Missouri dog auction where breeding dogs are bought and sold. These websites are doing what pet stores do: marketing cruel, commercially bred puppies as top-quality dogs from the country's top breeders. But just like at a pet store, buyers can't see where the puppy came from, how many dogs lived there or what living conditions were like. Many don't even know the breeder's identity—let alone get to ask questions directly. The puppies sold on sites like these come from the same places pet store puppies do: large commercial breeding facilities (aka puppy mills) where hundreds of dogs live in cages, churning out puppies for profit. Don't let them fool you. If you are looking for a dog, consider adopting from your local shelter. If you're buying a puppy, work with a breeder who invites you to visit, see where the puppy was raised and meet the mom. BIG WIN for dogs in California! 🐶💛 Governor Gavin Newsom has officially signed all three puppy mill protection bills into law –shutting down deceptive sales and keeping cruel puppy mill practices out of California. These laws will: ✅ Close the “puppy broker” loophole (A.B. 519) ✅ Protect families from predatory online puppy sales (A.B. 506) ✅ Bring transparency to out-of-state puppy imports (S.B. 312) We thank Governor Newsom for signing this landmark legislation into law, with special thanks to CA Senator Tom Umberg and CA Assemblymembers Steve Bennett and Marc Berman for championing these efforts to protect California’s people and pets. We also thank our incredible supporters and each and every one of you who took action to help advance these bills this session. Together, we’re ending the puppy mill pipeline! 🐾 https://bit.ly/4h9vq31

⭐Check Out Recent Animal Stars of the ASPCA Community Veterinary Clinics! ✨ The ASPCA’s Community Veterinary Clinics make it easier for pet owners to access essential vaccines and basic care—often at no or low cost. Our clinics in the Bronx, Queens, and Brooklyn in New York City and Miami, Florida, are open for appointments every Wednesday and Friday afternoon. At our Queens clinic, supported by The Rachael Ray Foundation™, we welcomed several first-time visitors, including Viviana and her cat, Luna, and a 12-week-old puppy, Tiana, and her family! 🐶 Little brave pup, Tiana, was brought in to receive rabies and distemper shots, as well as dewormer. These vaccines are critical to pets to help them live healthier lives and fight off diseases! 😺 Luna was seen for a physical for her upcoming spay surgery and Viviana received more information on trap-neuter-return services for strays in her neighborhood. “We’re reaching thousands of underserved pet owners each year,” says Dr. Lori Bierbrier, senior medical director, eastern region, for Community Medicine. “By doing so, we’re helping improve the health and welfare of dogs and cats in these communities.” These clinics, including the Queens facility supported by The Rachael Ray Foundation, have provided affordable and accessible vet care for over 100K cats and dogs since 2019 😲 We're grateful to support local communities and their pets 🧡 #ASPCA #CommunityVeterinaryClinics #CommunityVetClinics #VeterinaryCare

We’re bringing back a favorite fall tradition — the canine pack walk! 🍂 October is #AdoptAShelterDog Month, and there’s no better way to celebrate than getting our dogs (and team!) out to enjoy the crisp autumn air. Pack walks are a great chance for shelter pups to take a break, stretch their legs, and maybe even meet a future adopter along the way. 🐾 This special walk is part of our partnership with Subaru of America and the Subaru Loves Pets program! 🚗💙 All month long, Subaru retailers are supporting local shelters through grants administered by the ASPCA — helping cover costs for veterinary care, adoption prep, and more. #SubaruLovesPets #AdoptAShelterDogMonth #HappyFallYall #AnimalRescue #ASPCApro

It’s rare for a source of farm animal suffering to be entirely preventable and possible to end with a quick fix, but male chick culling is one of them. In-ovo sexing technology, recently covered by FoodPrint, is rolling out in the U.S. egg industry and has the potential to spare the ongoing suffering of 300 million chicks per year.     The very first eggs using this technology in the U.S. are already available from NestFresh Eggs at most Whole Foods Market locations across the country.     We encourage the egg industry to embrace this advancement in animal welfare. As grocery shoppers, you can get involved too—if these eggs aren’t yet available near you, politely ask your supermarket to carry them! Did you know that half of the eggs produced by the egg industry (more than 300 million per year) are ground up or asphyxiated because they're male? Some hatcheries use the chicks for animal feed, but overall their deaths are considered an unavoidable byproduct of egg production. Finally, some egg companies, like NestFresh Eggs, are beginning to employ technology that makes it possible to determine the sex of chicks before they're hatched. One year later, we're checking in with pups rescued from Hurricane Helene 🧡 When Hurricane Helene devastated the Southeast, the ASPCA mobilized to several states to provide round-the-clock support to shelters, pets and pet parents impacted. During that time, we placed 126 unowned animals with our amazing shelter partners and transported the remaining unowned animals to our recovery center in Ohio. Today, we're excited to share an update on a few of the animals impacted. 🐶 Yogi was one of 19 dogs transferred from an emergency shelter in North Carolina to us in Ohio. His adopter, Leah S., found him online and was floored by how much he looked like her previous pup, who had recently passed away. While he was initially nervous, Yogi has settled into life well, showing off more of his cuddly side every day. He's even brought new life into Leah's other dog, Pearl. 🐶 Squirrel found himself on the same transport as Yogi. At our facility, he was struggling to relax in his kennel and had a lot of energy. His adopter, Megan, also found him online and couldn't get his face out of her head. In his new home, Squirrel absolutely loves structure and routine, which has helped him and Megan work through a few challenges. Megan and her family wouldn't change a thing about him! Visit https://bit.ly/42nqly2 to read more about our efforts during Hurricane Helene, and where some of these special pups landed.
