About us
ACM, the Association for Computing Machinery, is the world's largest educational and scientific computing society, uniting educators, researchers and professionals to inspire dialogue, share resources and address the field's challenges. As a leading global source for scientific information, ACM promotes computer research and innovation through its journals, magazines, and the proceedings of more than 170 annual conferences and symposia. ACM authors are among the world's leading thinkers in computing and information technologies, providing original research and firsthand perspectives. Founded at the dawn of the computer age, ACM’s reach extends to every part of the globe, with more than half of its more than 100,000 members residing outside the U.S. Its growing membership has led to Councils in Europe, India, and China, fostering networking opportunities that strengthen ties within and across countries and technical communities. Their actions enhance ACM’s ability to raise awareness of computing’s important technical, educational, and social issues around the world.

Happy Birthday to #ACMTuringAward recipient Barbara Liskov! She received the award in 2008 for contributions to practical and theoretical foundations of programming language and system design, especially related to data abstraction, fault tolerance, and distributed computing. Liskov made history as only the second woman ever to receive the ACM A.M. Turing Award, honored for her foundational contributions to programming languages and system design. In this video, Liskov talks about how she invented the "data abstraction" concept: https://lnkd.in/eJ55Kr8W

🗣 ICYMI: ACM’s Director of Publications, Scott Delman, published an article in #AgainsttheGrain exploring what transparency means in today’s scholarly publishing landscape and why it matters more than ever. He asks: How well are current OA models meeting your institution’s expectations for transparency? We’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments! 💬 Read the full article: https://bit.ly/48Lvc0a #OpenAccess #ScholarlyPublishing Charleston Hub

Recently, together with his Google colleagues, Michel H. Devoret, one of the three physicists who won this year’s Nobel Prize in Physics, shared that Google's quantum computer had successfully run a new algorithm "13,000 times as fast as a top supercomputer executing similar code in the realm of classical physics." "An emerging field of science claims to be able to predict aesthetic traits, intelligence, and even moral character in embryos. As this niche technology begins to make its way toward the mainstream, scientists and ethicists are racing to confront the implications—for our social contract, for future generations, and for our very understanding of what it means to be human." https://buff.ly/WsuKRfs

#OTD in #ComputingHistory in 1997, one of the earliest known emoji sets was released on a Japanese mobile phone. The J‑Phone DP-211SW debuted with a set of 90 pictographic characters (“emoji”). These symbols paved the way for the global emoji language we now use to express emotions, concepts and tone in digital conversations.
