The Association for Institutional Research (AIR) was glad to join our Postsecondary Data Collaborative partners in supporting these practical recommendations to the Department of Education. Thoughtful input from researchers and practitioners helps ensure new data collections advance both data quality and transparency. #air4data #IRwatercooler #IPEDS
The U.S. Department of Education has proposed the largest-ever change to the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (#IPEDS), adding more than 100 new questions and 10,000+ data fields on college admissions. In response, 36 members and partners of the IHEP-led Postsecondary Data Collaborative shared key recommendations to help ensure any new data collected are accurate, consistent, and useful for students, families, and policymakers. To protect data quality and minimize unnecessary reporting burdens, we recommend that ED: ✨ Establish clear data definitions and reporting guidance with input from researchers and practitioners 🎯 Narrow this year’s data collection to undergraduate students and roll out new elements gradually ⏳ Postpone retrospective data collection 🎓 Delay data collection on graduate students 🧑💻 Fully staff the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) and reinstate key contracts to ensure technical support and reliable reporting Read the full letter to ED: https://lnkd.in/eYG9NvmD #CollegeAdmissions #HigherEd #PolicyRecommendations #PostsecData

Today, the Association for Institutional Research (AIR) submitted comments to the U.S. Department of Education on the proposed Admissions and Consumer Transparency Supplement (ACTS) to IPEDS. Informed by feedback from more than 580 data professionals, AIR’s letter emphasizes that meaningful transparency depends on data that are accurate, comparable, and feasible to collect. Our recommendations aim to maintain the integrity of IPEDS while ensuring new reporting supports clear, trustworthy information for students and the public. I’m grateful to everyone who shared their insights and perspectives to help shape this important response.
