If you're a hardware startup and you're thinking about hiring your first operations resource...then you're probably late, says parichit kumar. As a hardware startup, you're constantly looking to optimize for time and for cost, right? But you shouldn't be thinking about this as a binary decision. You can bring on a fractional employee or a consultant, and you can focus on critical parts, but you need to have a qualified person in place to form that feedback loop between the supply chain and the manufacturability of the product and the design team that's actually designing the product. So you can actually end up with a product that can be scaled at cost. If you don't get the right person in time, you might end up with a product that's expensive, that's not manufacturable. And then you bring on someone who has to go fix it! That will take months of time and more money, and possibly to have to re-certify the entire product. Comment below if you've been in THAT boat...

One of my favorite influencers is Anne-Marie Roerink, who quantitatively tracks trends in food sales. This month, she noted that refrigerated plant-based meat sales in the U.S. are essentially back to 2019 levels, before retailers started stocking these items in the fresh meat isle. We've essentially witnessed the rise and fall of a new retail category, in under 6 years. From 2019 to 2020, sales of these products nearly doubled, then 5 years later, all of those gains have been wiped out. The boom demonstrated that there's consumer interest in products that promise health and environmental benefits, but it's not a free pass. The guardrails of taste, texture, and of course, price, still apply. It may serve as a good framework for future category-defining products.
