ATRIUM Project
Research Services
Alternatives for a Transition to Reusable construction products by the Innovative production of User bio-based Materials
About us
ATRIUM Project is a 42-month Innovation Action structured to develop innovative bio-based SSbD materials towards new construction-oriented consumer products and applications. Results obtained during the project will accelerate the market introduction of sustainable products by integrating commercial bio-based polymers (such as bio-PE or bio-PA) together with hemp-based natural fibers, recycled organic materials, growth of mycelium into hemp and cotton organic substrates or the production of a bio-composite blend of hemp and lime.

🔍 Have you spotted ATRIUM in Linz? Last week, we joined the BNN - BioNanoNet Annual Forum & Networking Session, a gathering of experts shaping the future of bio-, nano-, and advanced materials. Represented by our partner Wood K plus - Kompetenzzentrum Holz GmbH, Ivana Burzic pitched ATRIUM’s work on implementing the Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD) framework, thus showing how #sustainability and #safety can go hand in hand from the very first stages of material development. The event featured insightful sessions on sustainable materials, SSbD case studies, and circular design, plus guided visits to leading research infrastructures at JKU, CHASE, WOOD K Plus, and RECENDT. 💡 These exchanges are essential to build synergies, share knowledge, and strengthen ATRIUM’s contribution to safer and more sustainable innovation in construction. At #ATRIUM, our mission is clear: to develop #innovative biocomposites to make the construction sector more #sustainable, efficient, and environmentally friendly. We create materials that build a better future. That's why we deeply admire the approach of the REMEDIES project. They have identified the key sources of marine plastic pollution and are tackling each one with a specific and innovative prevention solution. Their third pillar is a playbook on how to act: 🔹 For ghost fishing, they are introducing biodegradable fishing nets. 🔹 For tourism and consumption, they are promoting zero-waste cups and bottles. 🔹 For the cosmetics industry, they are developing natural and plastic-free packaging. 🔹 For the community, they are launching anti-litter campaigns and workshops. This is not a one-size-fits-all approach, but an ecosystem of smart prevention strategies. 💡 Right now, REMEDIES is also leading an Anti-Litter Campaign in Spain, spearheaded by Aitiip Centro Tecnológico at the Zaragoza Demo Site. The campaign engages students, entrepreneurs, and communities to detect, prevent, and valorize plastic litter and it’s a perfect example of how awareness and innovation go hand in hand. 👏 We congratulate REMEDIES on this strategic and multifaceted approach and invite you to follow their work to see how the fight against pollution is being waged, one innovation at a time. 👉 Learn more about their mission: https://lnkd.in/djHC2wvf The project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon Europe Framework Programme under Grant Agreement No 101135031and co-funded by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) under the UK government’s Horizon Europe funding guarantee. As a foundation dedicated to citizen science and participatory research, Fundación Ibercivis brings people closer to innovation: empowering them to take an active role in shaping the future through science. A partner in the #ATRIUM project, Fundación Ibercivis has extensive experience in bridging research and society. From mid-2026, its work will focus on testing ATRIUM’s biobased composites beyond the laboratory, through three key actions: 🔹 SME testing: engaging small and medium enterprises to validate the performance of the innovative materials developed by the project in real-world contexts. 🔹 Open calls: inviting citizens and artists to experiment with the materials, transforming them into creative works and prototypes. 🔹 Exhibition: showcasing these explorations, where art, industry, and sustainability meet. By combining testing, citizen engagement, and artistic expression, Ibercivis will ensure that ATRIUM’s innovations are not only technically validated, but also valued by the community. Stay tuned for the launch of our first open calls next summer and do not miss out on the opportunity to participate! 🙌 The project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon Europe Framework Programme under Grant Agreement No 101135031and co-funded by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) under the UK government’s Horizon Europe funding guarantee.
