We are delighted to announce the next steps in progressing the work of the Barcelona Declaration for Open Research Information. https://lnkd.in/eTerDVWi Firstly, the working groups are almost ready to go, with coordinators appointed for almost all of them. Also, Bianca Kramer has been appointed Executive Director 🎉 (& will soon hire for a Community Manager). We have secured admin and funding support for the next three years, and we are readying to discuss with signatories and supporters the creation of a new board. Thanks to everyone involved so far, and congratulations to Bianca, who will lead this effort alongside her other consulting work.

Registration fees for 5th Workshop on Open Citations and Open Scholarly Metadata (WOOC2025) on May 28-29 can be covered for signatory and supporting organizations of the Barcelona Declaration. Registration (and the call for contributions) is open for one more week (until January 31, 2025) using this form: https://lnkd.in/dKNi67pt. The meeting is co-organized by the Barcelona Declaration on Open Research Information, University of Bologna (Alma Mater Studiorum – Università di Bologna) and OpenCitations. The first day of the meeting will be dedicated to the Barcelona Declaration. It will have a workshop-like character and will be focused on the actions in the roadmap that were collectively put together during the Paris Conference on Open Research Information. It will also be an opportunity for the working groups that are currently being set up to present their plans and discuss these with other participants. The second day of the meeting will be dedicated to invited contributions, presentations and a poster session on the topic of open scholarly metadata. Both days are open to everyone. Bibliographic databases should support innovation and experimentation. A blog post (https://lnkd.in/ewFeyadw) published earlier this week on the FORCE11 Upstream blog presents several criteria for innovation-friendly bibliographic databases. The post challenges current practices of selective databases such as Scopus and Web of Science and argues that these practices inhibit innovation in scholarly communication. There is a brief reference to the Barcelona Declaration in the post. The authors of the piece are associated with several reform initiatives in scholarly communication and research assessment, including the Barcelona Declaration (but the piece does not necessarily reflect the formal positions of these reform initiatives).
