  • Recently, the Van Wert Chamber of Commerce invited our Paducah, Kentucky team to be a part of the Bureau of Worker’s Compensation training on behavioral health issues in the workplace. Addressing this topic is critical to maintaining a healthy, safe, and productive workforce—and its not always easy. Mary Miller, Behavioral Health Outreach Specialist, shared examples of what to watch for, tips on having conversations, and stressed the importance of EAPs. She also reminded us all that being open, honest and compassionate is the best first step for keeping everyone safe.

  • A Unified Statement From Our Community: Compassionate health care for every child and every family requires meaningful collaboration, shared accountability and a collective commitment to putting children first. While the path to partnership has not always been easy, the growing complexity of pediatric care makes it clear that working together is essential. Since 2019, collaboration between Mercy Health and Nationwide Children’s Hospital has helped improve pediatric care within our community in meaningful ways. Families in our region have seen expanded access to care, new pediatric specialists and broader services that meet children where they are. These outcomes are proof that when institutions align around a common purpose, real progress is possible. At the same time, recent tensions have raised concern and threatened to slow the momentum of this important work. As a greater community, we recognize those concerns. We also know that no single organization can meet the needs of our children alone. It will take a unified approach to move forward. That approach must be grounded in transparency, cooperation and the inclusion of all. We are encouraged that dialogue has resumed. We thank Lucas County Commissioner Pete Gerken, Toledo Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz and Tina Butts of The Movement for their leadership in bringing stakeholders back to the table. Their efforts show what is possible when trusted voices step forward with courage and clarity to keep the focus where it belongs, on the children and families of this community. Now, with that foundation reestablished, we call on ProMedica Health System to join Mercy Health and Nationwide Children’s Hospital in charting the next phase of pediatric care in northwest Ohio. A stronger future is within reach, but only if we continue this work together. We stand united in support of a renewed, transparent and inclusive partnership that places children at the center of every decision. Let us move forward as one community, committed to a shared vision of building a better community. Through sincere collaboration and with transparency among all three health systems, our entire community stands to benefit. The time is now.

  • At Bon Secours Mercy Health (BSMH), we believe that when associates are supported, empowered and valued, they can deliver their best to the patients and communities we serve. That commitment was recently recognized by Seramount, which named BSMH to the following lists for 2025: 100 Best Companies, Top Companies for Executive Women, Best Companies for Multicultural Women and Inclusion Index. These recognitions reinforce the work happening every day across our ministry: creating opportunities for associates to grow their careers and extending compassionate care to millions of patients each year.

  • We are thrilled to announce that Mercy Health -- Allen Hospital (in our Lorain, Ohio market) has earned the distinguished Dual 5-Star Rating from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) — achieving both a 5-star overall hospital quality rating and a 5-star patient experience (HCAHPS) rating. This prestigious recognition places Mercy Health -- Allen among an elite group of hospitals nationwide, underscoring our relentless commitment to providing safe, high-quality, and compassionate care to our community and beyond. • Bon Secours Mercy Health (BSMH) is honored to be recognized by Community Housing Capital, Inc. (CHC) with its inaugural Best Non-Bank Investor Award. This recognition highlights our commitment to addressing social determinants of health by investing in affordable housing that strengthens families and communities. Through a $10 million investment with CHC, we are helping expand lending capacity for affordable housing projects in Lorain, OH; Baltimore, MD; and Richmond, VA. This “patient capital” creates long-term stability and demonstrates how health systems can play a transformative role in building healthier, more resilient communities. “Safe, stable housing serves as a foundation for a family’s overall health. We know that investing in affordable housing creates lasting benefits, and we are proud to continue expanding these efforts,” said Kendra N. Smith, AICP MPH MSUS, Vice President, Community Health, who accepted the recognition from Marietta Rodriguez, president & CEO of NeighborWorks America, and Julie Porter, president of DreamKey Partners and Community Housing Capital’s Board Chair. To date, our Direct Community Investment program has invested more than $33 million across five states to support affordable housing—and we’re just getting started. We’re proud to partner with CHC and others to ensure that every family has the opportunity to thrive.

  • At Mercy Health – St. Rita’s Medical Center in our Lima, Ohio market, innovation and teamwork recently saved a life and set a new milestone for trauma care. When 27-year-old Zack Finn arrived with life-threatening injuries and severe lung failure after a car accident, his chances of survival were less than 20%. For the first time at St. Rita’s, the trauma team deployed Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO), an advanced life-support technology typically reserved for large tertiary centers to bypass Zack’s damaged lungs and give his body time to heal. This extraordinary outcome was made possible by seamless, multidisciplinary collaboration among trauma surgeons, critical care specialists, nurses, and rehabilitation experts. Over two weeks, ECMO supported Zack’s recovery, while compassionate care and relentless determination helped him regain strength for his daughter and family. As Jason Bowersock, MD, shares: “This case pushes us to keep advancing our protocols, investing in training, and strengthening collaboration. Most importantly, it shows our community that even in the most severe situations, recovery beyond expectations is possible.”
