As the birthplace of public education in this nation, the Boston Public Schools is committed to transforming the lives of all children through exemplary teaching in a world-class system of innovative, welcoming schools. We partner with the community, families, and students to develop in every learner the knowledge, skill, and character to excel in college, career, and life.
It’s National School Lunch Week!
Between October 13 and October 17, we celebrate the nutritious, delicious meals that fuel learning every day across Boston Public Schools.
Boston Public Schools Food and Nutrition Services works hard to provide healthy, balanced meals made with fresh, local ingredients – giving every student the energy they need to learn, grow, and thrive.
Join us in thanking our incredible cafeteria teams for their dedication and care in serving our students every day!
Today, on Indigenous Peoples’ Day, Boston Public Schools honors and celebrates the histories, cultures, and enduring strength of First Nations’ communities. We recognize the many nations whose traditions, knowledge, and resilience continue to enrich our city and our classrooms.
Reminder: All BPS buildings will be closed today in observance.
We’re celebrating 20 years of summer learning through Boston Beyond!
Boston After School & Beyond celebrated 20 years of supporting students with City of Boston officials, Massachusetts Secretary of Education Patrick Tutwiler, elected leaders and 250-plus community leaders.
Highlights included the record-breaking Summer 2025 5th Quarter of Learning and experiences of the 18,000-plus students who participated in 241 programs.
5th Quarter of Learning provides Boston Public Schools students with a wide variety of enrichment opportunities to improve academics, foster mental health, prepare for college, and encourage vocational skills.
Since 2005, Boston Beyond has driven systemic change in education by investing $50 million in grants to after-school and summer programs, collaborating with local and state governments to create supportive policy and funding.

Wednesday was a big day for Boston Public Schools
We joined the City of Boston to celebrate the ribbon cutting for Sarah Roberts Elementary School — honoring the Roberts family’s fight for school desegregation in Boston.
Roberts descendants were among the 150-plus people who packed the newly renovated building to mark this milestone. Students wowed the crowd with musical performances, and Mayor Michelle Wu and Superintendent Mary Skipper spoke about unity, renewal, and making Boston a home for everyone.
From a refreshed gym and media center to a powerful new name, this school embodies resilience, legacy, and community.
Thank you to everyone who supported this project and the community, and for attending the ribbon cutting ceremony.
PREMIERING NOW! 🎬🍿
Boston Public Schools presents “Good Morning, Good Morning, Good Morning, My Friends,” a short film about recent Charlestown High School graduate Ophelia Hughes and her last days working with the STRIVE Snack Cart at the BPS Central Office in Roxbury.
During the last school year, Ophelia was responsible for the snack cart’s inventory, stocking, placing orders, and cashing out at the end of her shift three days a week. Ophelia quickly became a familiar face at the Bruce C. Bolling Municipal Building, providing words of affirmation, snacks to battle that mid-morning lull, and plenty of laughs and smiles.
Follow along as Ophelia concludes her time with the snack cart and says goodbye to all the friends she’s made throughout the Bolling Building.
For more than 35 years, BPS’ STRIVE (Supported Training to Reach Independence Through Vocational Experiences) Department has provided postsecondary students with disabilities between the ages of 18 and 22 with pre-vocational, vocational, and transition services. Part of the BPS Office of Specialized Services, STRIVE works in collaboration with the District’s high schools to support students like Ophelia as they move from BPS and into employment and training.
The snack cart is one of the creative ways STRIVE prepares students for life beyond BPS.

October is National Principals Month!
Principals and school leaders are instrumental in cultivating a positive school climate and establishing a supportive working environment for educators and staff. They are a trusted resource for parents and respected members of our communities. Their decisions directly impact student’s lives. We are fortunate at Boston Public Schools to have outstanding leaders who have chosen to call this District home.
This month let’s take the opportunity to appreciate and applaud the work of our school leader!
Thursday, October 2, was National Custodian Day and also School Custodian Appreciation Day!
These unsung heroes keep our buildings clean, safe, and welcoming every day. They ensure our facilities are working, raise issues to the appropriate staff for repairs and resolution, and serve as the first line of communication to support a healthy learning environment for students and staff.
In celebration of School Custodian Appreciation Day, Boston Public Schools is highlighting some of the great custodians who serve in our school communities:
Shawn Wiggins has been on the Carter School custodial team since August, when the new building opened. He works to ensure the cleaning work is completed in time for all classes. “Shawn is a likeable, reliable and trustworthy team member,” his colleague Paulette Whitaker said. “He always makes the day fun and easy-going without any friction.”
Thank you, school custodians, for all your hard work. We are so lucky to have you as part of our community! Give a shout out to your school custodian next time you see them!
