Congrats and thank you to our Environmental Intern, Liz Jenkins, who won an award for her Pollution Prevention Project at our company!
I am honored to share that I received the 2025 Best Pollution Prevention Project Award from the The Colorado Green Business Network for my fellowship with Boulder Scientific Company this summer. During my time with BSC, I completed various projects and focused my EPA P2 case study on hazardous waste reduction and dry ice optimization. Through conducting hazardous waste container audits and igniting behavioral shifts through targeted training materials, reductions of over 2,500 pounds of non-conforming waste were projected annually. I also examined the company’s use of nearly 84,000 pounds of dry ice each year and uncovered the mass amounts being lost to sublimation annually. I recommended alternative technologies that would significantly cut costs, mimic scaled up batch processes much better, and reduce emissions by approximately 38 metric tons of CO2 equivalent per year. The success of these projects greatly depended on communication and collaboration. Working closely with operators, chemists, and environmental technicians ensured the solutions were practical, scalable, and embraced across departments. I am grateful for my time at Boulder Scientific Company, my supervisor Benjamin Soloway, and the EHS team for their support and guidance throughout this fellowship.
