About us

California Rural Legal Assistance, Inc. (CRLA) is an anti-poverty law firm that dismantles unjust systems through community lawyering in California’s historically rural areas. We work with people priced out of private legal representation so they can uphold civil rights in housing, employment, health, and public education. We are a nonprofit but not a charity. Community lawyering builds shared power to generate legal strategies driven by the expertise and vision of communities. Our vision is a just and equitable world where all communities prosper. California’s historically rural areas have the diversity and insight that make them uniquely suited to build that world. Through our 17 Rural Justice Centers, communities can access a broad range of legal tools at no charge, including direct legal services, specialized litigation to advance civil rights, and place-based advocacy to expand equity in civic institutions.

California Rural Legal Assistance, Inc.’s LGBTQ+ Program won a precedent setting appeal last year that laid groundwork for California Senate Bill 59 (SB 59), the Transgender Privacy Act, which was signed into law by Gov Newsom on Monday. The bill, introduced by Sen Scott Wiener, protects the privacy and safety of transgender and nonbinary individuals by automatically sealing court records related to name and gender marker corrections. The opportunity to seal these records used to be up to a judge’s discretion, and now it’s law and the record sealing happens automatically, which means they are not publicly discoverable. This all means that trans folks are just a little safer in CA and that judges can’t continue to rule against transgender and non-binary folks in this way when it comes to their privacy. #crlaproud Here’s the text of the bill: https://lnkd.in/gvAQDbZj

  • From the fields of the Central Valley to the stars, Dr. José Hernández's journey embodies the spirit of perseverance and pride we celebrate this Hispanic Heritage Month. ⭐ Born in the Central Valley and raised as a migrant farmworker, 2025 Tardeada Honoree Dr. José Hernández, CEO, Tierra Luna Engineering and former NASA astronaut, turned his childhood dreams into reality guided by his parents' wisdom. His father told him, "The same work ethic you put out picking fruits and vegetables with your siblings, your mom and dad, Saturdays and Sundays, seven days a week during the summer, he pointed to my books on the kitchen table and said, 'Pon ese esfuerzo aqui.' Put that effort here." 🎧 Listen as Dr. Hernández shares his five-ingredient golden recipe for success, offering a roadmap to success for dreamers across generations. We're proud to celebrate stories like Dr. Hernández's. Who inspires you this Hispanic Heritage Month? 👇 #HispanicHeritageMonth #CentralValley

  • The County of Monterey recognized CRLA’s Indigenous Justice Program in a resolution for our legal services and advocacy on behalf of Indigenous communities in Monterey County and throughout rural California. Norma Ventura, Indigenous Justice Program Director, provided remarks at today's ceremonial resolution. CRLA's Indigenous Justice Program is the only legal services program in California exclusively focused on the legal rights of Indigenous Latin American communities. Our team provides community services such as outreach, trainings, and systemic litigation/projects to help achieve our vision of a just and equitable world where all communities prosper. Thank you to the Office of Monterey County Supervisor Luis A. Alejo for this recognition! #MontereyCounty #IndigenousJustice

  • Our offices are closed today in honor of Indigenous Peoples' Day. We acknowledge that we operate on stolen land and we strive to honor the past, present, and future of the Indigenous peoples of California. Through our Indigenous Justice Program and Language Justice Initiative, we fight alongside Indigenous Latin American communities in California as they advocate for equitable access to resources, a say in legal decisions and institutions, and respect for Indigenous language and culture. Now more than ever, CRLA remains committed to our vision of a just and equitable world where all communities prosper, and we will continue to dismantle unjust systems through community lawyering. • In Sonoma County, where immigrant and low-income communities face systemic barriers and are pushed out of their homes, denied wages, and cut off from public benefits, our Santa Rosa office steps in and serves the community in their legal goals. These systemic barriers do not end in Sonoma County, and neither does our fight for justice. From Santa Rosa to communities across rural California, our offices are working to protect housing rights, workers' rights, and dignity across California. Together, our Rural Justice Centers form a power grid – or as we call it, a Justice Grid – connecting rural Californians to CRLA, legal services, education, and other resources. ✊ To support CRLA's mission, please visit crla.org/donate #SantaRosa #SonomaCounty #JusticeGrid #RuralCalifornia

  • This month, CRLA's Indigenous Justice team provided a training to California state agencies such as Employment Development Department, California Department of Industrial Relations's LCO, Cal-OSHA, and Agricultural Labor Relations Board on language access rights for Indigenous language speakers. Indigenous Latin American communities have enriched California’s linguistic and cultural diversity, yet encounter language barriers when agencies and service providers fail to provide meaningful access. CRLA's Indigenous Justice program is the only legal services program in California exclusively focused on the legal rights of Indigenous Latin American communities. Our team provides community services such as outreach, trainings, and systemic litigation/projects throughout rural California to help achieve our vision of a just and equitable world where all communities prosper. • POV: Celebrating civil rights wins, honoring our champions, and welcoming new allies during an afternoon of food, music, art, and community. ✨ Saturday’s Los Angeles Tardeada filled us with joy, determination, and resilience to insist another world is possible—el coraje de insistir que otro mundo es posible. We honored two incredible humans who have taught us so much about courage and perseverance, former NASA astronaut Jose Hernandez and Civil Rights icon Carol Ruth Silver. We shared our vision for how community lawyering can turn protest and resistance sparked by injustice into new possibilities. And we raised funds that can keep our civil legal services free for rural Californians priced out of private legal representation. Thank you to everyone who made this a memorable celebration! Your support for CRLA’s community lawyering means so much to us, especially now. Missed the event but still want to be part of the impact?
