October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, and Capital Bank is proud to join this nationwide initiative to keep people, data, and businesses safe online. This year’s theme, Building a Cyberstrong America, highlights the importance of strengthening our country’s digital infrastructure against evolving threats. Every action matters. Together, we can protect the systems we rely on every day. Four simple ways to stay cyberstrong: • Keep your software up to date to close security gaps and protect your devices from the latest threats. • Create strong, unique passwords for every account and use a password manager to keep them safe and easy to manage. • Turn on multifactor authentication (MFA) to add an extra layer of security and protect your accounts even if a password is compromised. • Stay alert for suspicious messages, links, and attachments, and report anything that looks out of place before taking action. Cybersecurity isn’t just for IT—it’s for everyone. Let’s do our part to keep our communities, businesses, and nation secure. Capital Bank was honored to present the 2025 Military Leadership Symposium: “Perseverance: Overcoming Life’s Challenges to Rediscover One’s North Star.” The event, held last month at the Army Navy Country Club in Arlington, brought together distinguished voices to share stories of courage and resilience. The evening featured an extraordinary panel of American heroes who inspired with their journeys of service and strength: Commander Everett Alvarez, Jr. (USN, Ret.) – The first American aviator shot down over North Vietnam who endured 8 years and 6 months as a prisoner of war (1964-1973). His distinguished career includes service as Deputy Director of the Peace Corps and Deputy Administrator of the Veterans Administration. A recipient of the Silver Star, Legion of Merit, and Purple Heart, he's been honored as one of the 25 greatest public servants by the Council for Excellence in Government. CDR Alvarez shares his journey of resilience in his books "Chained Eagle" and "Code of Conduct." PFC Jessica Lynch (USA, Ret.) – Former POW and Bronze Star recipient who made history as the first successfully rescued female American prisoner of war since World War II. Now serving as the Women Veteran Program Director with the WV Department of Veteran Assistance, Jessica inspires audiences nationwide with her message of perseverance, sharing how determination and a positive outlook helped her survive both during captivity and in civilian life. Col. Arnulfo “Marty” Martinez (USA, Ret.) – Former Executive Director of The Big Red Barn Retreat, dedicated to helping Veterans and First Responders transition from Post Traumatic Stress to Post Traumatic Growth. A retired US Army veteran with Pentagon experience and defense contractor collaboration, Marty hosts "The Lounge with Legends Show" podcast. Featured in The Washington Post, Stars and Stripes, and major networks, he's a published author who connects deeply with those he serves through authentic engagement, guiding them toward healing and resilience. This symposium honored the strength, perseverance, and leadership of those who serve. As a bank that proudly supports the military community, we’re honored to help spotlight the stories of individuals who’ve faced incredible challenges, demonstrated courage, and continue to inspire the military and civilian communities alike. It was a privilege to bring these voices together in tribute to the enduring spirit of the American military.
