🗾 Which CDR method will lead Japan’s climate strategy? 🤝 While leading companies including Mitsubishi Corporation and Mitsubishi Research Institute formed the Japan CDR Association to scale the CDR market in the country, the GX2040 Vision, released earlier this year, positions “CDR leading to regional revitalization” as a strategic pillar in Japan’s path to carbon neutrality by 2040. 🗣 We are also seeing a growing participation from corporates, researchers, and financiers in Japan’s carbon removal ecosystem and recently major summits and conferences have been held, discussing Japan’s role in scaling CDR. ❓ Which category of durable CDR do you think is most likely to lead the way in Japan? 🍃 BiCRS (BCR, BECCS, Other Biomass) 💨 Direct Air Capture ⛰ Enhanced Weathering 🌊 mCDR 💬 Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

BREAKING: The UK’s Independent Review of Greenhouse Gas Removals just proposed something I’ve argued for quite some time: 👉 Revise the Sustainable Aviation Fuel Mandate into a Net Zero Aviation Mandate, where carbon removals and SAF compete to deliver climate-neutral flights. This sets up CDR for what it is supposed to be, a mitigation solution in its own right. Neither better nor worse than other solutions. Hopefully, it can inspire the EU to make similar changes to its ReFuel EU directive. This review might be the most important CDR document this year. It has many other important recommendations too; it calls for the UK gov to: - Embrace the principle of geological net zero, meaning fossil emissions must be balanced by geological removals, not trees or soils. - Set up a GGR Strategy with clear national targets. - Create an Office for Greenhouse Gas Removals, giving CDR a permanent home in government. - Create UK standards for DACCS, BECCS, Biochar and ERW, and endorse existing standards in the meantime. - Set up new vehicles for innovation funding and R&D with additional support for pilot- and mid-scale projects to address “valley of death” issues and secure a pipeline of diverse GGR. The report is an official government-commissioned independent review, intended to influence policy so it carries a lot of weight. Thanks to Carbon Gap for keeping us informed on this, and for your work to influence UK CDR policy!
