On 7th November TORCH | The Oxford Research Centre in the Humanities will host “Equity in Global Health: Reflections from the Humanities” at the new Schwarzman Centre for the Humanities. The event will explore how humanities perspectives can inform and advance equity in global health. Centre for Global Epilepsy Professor Sloan Mahone will be speaking on Global Mental Health and the Lived Experiences of Stigmatized Conditions, and will be joined by colleagues Professor Caesar Atuire, Dr Tolulope Osayomi, Professor Ann Kelly, Professor Erica Charters and Dr Alberto Giubilini. We’re delighted to share that the Centre for Global Epilepsy has been awarded funding for the Oxford Martin Programme on Equitable Allocation of Medicines! This funding supports our work on the Medication Availability Tracking Tool - a digital platform using real-time data to improve access to essential medicines, including those for conditions such as epilepsy, schizophrenia and dementia in Zimbabwe. In collaboration with the University of Oxford, World Health Organization, Clinton Health Access Initiative, Inc., University of Zimbabwe, National Pharmaceuticals Company of Zimbabwe (NatPharm) and Zimbabwe’s Ministry of Health and Child Care (MoHCC), this work aims to make medicine supply more transparent, predictable and equitable. This research marks an important step toward a world where everyone - no matter where they live - can access life-saving medicines. Our team were delighted to be part of the Diagnostics for LMICs Conference at Reuben College, University of Oxford earlier this week. It was an inspiring two days exploring innovative approaches to improve diagnostics in low- and middle-income countries — from AI solutions to field-based tools — and to connect with so many dedicated colleagues working to address global health inequities. Our Chief Executive, Professor Arjune Sen, was honoured to present on global epilepsy diagnostics, highlighting the urgent need to improve access to culturally contextualised, affordable and scalable diagnostic pathways for epilepsy in under-resourced settings. Many thanks to the organisers for bringing together such a vibrant community of researchers, clinicians, industry partners and advocates. The first Centre dedicated to enhancing global epilepsy research and care was launched at Wolfson College University of Oxford, UK in January this year.
