🌧️ Storms don’t just bring rain—they bring pollution. When water rushes off streets, driveways, and rooftops, it picks up oil, trash, pet waste, and chemicals. That dirty mix flows straight into our rivers and the Bay, harming fish, flooding homes, and polluting water we drink and swim in. At CBF, we’re working to slow it down and soak it up—with rain gardens, trees, and regenerative agriculture practices. Saving the Bay through education, advocacy, litigation, and restoration.
About us
The Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) fights for bold and creative solutions to the pollution that plagues the Bay and its tributaries. Across the six-state Chesapeake watershed, CBF sets the agenda, serves as a watchdog, and speaks out on behalf of the Chesapeake Bay to business, government, and the public. CBF fights for strong and effective laws and regulations and works cooperatively with government, business, and citizens in partnerships to protect and restore the Bay. When necessary, we use legal means to force compliance with existing laws. We restore the Bay's essential habitats and filtering mechanisms, such as forests, wetlands, underwater grasses, and oysters, through a variety of hands-on projects. Finally, CBF's environmental education program introduces residents to the wonders of the watershed and works to heighten sensitivity, increase knowledge, and empower citizens to take positive action toward the Bay's restoration.

There are fewer menhaden along the Atlantic Coast than previously thought, leading to potential major catch reductions, according to scientific assessments released this week ahead of a fisheries regulators meeting. “To protect menhaden’s role in the food web, and meet science-based Ecological Reference Points, fisheries regulators must follow the science and immediately cut the coastwide harvest by at least 50 percent while also beginning the process to give menhaden additional protections urgently needed in the Chesapeake Bay," said CBF Forage Campaign Manager Will Poston. Striped bass in the Bay continue to struggle, according to recent results from Virginia and Maryland's annual juvenile striped bass survey. For the seventh consecutive year in Maryland and fourth consecutive year in Virginia, young striped bass numbers are well below the long-term average. “We urge the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission not to delay and take action now to help this iconic species," said CBF Virginia Executive Director Chris Moore. "There’s just too much at stake." Read more: https://lnkd.in/eKH6jgDq

⚠️ With key federal agencies absent from negotiations, states are scaling back conservation targets amid a possible delay of the new Bay Agreement into 2026. “We won’t know until the shutdown ends whether decisions taken in their absence align with how all federal agencies would have voted,” said Keisha Sedlacek, CBF Senior Policy Director. “We do know that Fish and Wildlife Service would have voted in favor of having waterbirds in the agreement, which EPA voted to remove.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/eCehx56B

⚠️ Virginians, we need your help! The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality will soon move to finalize a permit for Dominion Energy’s proposed Chesterfield Energy Reliability Center—a new fossil fuel power plant. Expert health analysis projects that CERC’s pollution could cause an average of 6.7 premature deaths and more than 14,600 illnesses every year in the region. We must stop this permit! Take action before the October 23 comment deadline and urge DEQ to deny the air permit: https://lnkd.in/eKd-4T_A
