No single organization can solve climate challenges alone. We need public-private partnerships, peer-to-peer learning, and cross-sector alliances to create the market conditions and workforce pipelines that benefit the planet, communities, and businesses. In this issue of Sustainably Speaking, our CSO Melanie Nakagawa and Noelle Walsh, President of Microsoft Cloud Operations and Innovation, share how these principles come to life in Wisconsin at our new AI datacenter: 🔌Energy: Fully funding our datacenter’s energy needs by working with the local utility to ensure that we are responsible for all of the costs of energy and new related infrastructure to serve our datacenter operations and matching all fossil power with carbon-free sources, including a new 250 MW solar project and a $20M community fund launching in 2027.  💧Water: A closed-loop liquid cooling system recirculates water to cool over 90% of servers, keeping annual usage as low as a typical restaurant. 👥 Community impact: Creating jobs and launching tech training programs.  Across Microsoft, partners and teams are leading the way for a more sustainable digital future. Read the latest edition to learn how we’re building datacenters with sustainability and community front and center.

  • 🌲 Live from the Field in Upstate NY! 🌲 Last week marked the first half of our Forest Stewardship Council audit with properties enrolled in Forest Carbon Works, our Improved Forest Management program. 🔍 A group of Chestnut's foresters and FSC auditors headed to upstate New York to spend a day immersed in the forest—cool weather, muddy boots, sunshine, and stunning fall colors. It was the kind of day that would make anyone want to be a forester. 🍂 Chestnut's IFM program shares the same pillars of success as FSC: ✅ Strong silviculture practices ✅ Deep social engagement with local stakeholders ✅ Clear economic viability of their forest management The result is verified; high-quality carbon credits you can trust to not just meet your net zero goals but have long-lasting environmental and community benefits. • 🌱 Scaling Biodiversity Through Certification: Chestnut Carbon + Forest Stewardship Council🌱 Tom Kain of Forest Stewardship Council U.S. supports forest management certificate holders and guides them through FSC’s Verified Impact procedure—a framework designed to deliver measurable environmental benefits at scale. ✅ Certified Impact: Chestnut's Sustainable Restoration Project is the first U.S.-based project verified through the FSC Verified Impact program for Biodiversity Conservation. We worked closely with Tom and his team to make this happen, quantifying the positive impacts on biodiversity that our project has achieved so far. 🌿 Habitat Restoration: Our work creates edge habitats and supports native wildlife—transforming low-productivity farmland into thriving ecosystems. 🔍 Audited & Accountable: Independent third-party audits ensure transparency, measurable outcomes, and credibility—reinforcing trust and additionality. 🤝 Community-Driven & Scalable: FSC certification connects landowners like Chestnut to a shared mission. Our efforts span 30,000+ acres across eight states and counting, proving that collective action can drive meaningful environmental change. Together, Chestnut Carbon and FSC are demonstrating how certification can unlock large-scale, lasting impact. 🌎 Learn more ➡️ https://lnkd.in/enWupp9w #Sustainability #Biodiversity #EnvironmentalImpact #ForestManagement #CarbonCredits #ClimateAction #EcosystemRestoration

  • At Chestnut Carbon, we go beyond carbon sequestration. Our science-led afforestation projects restore native forest ecosystems, stabilize streambanks, and improve aquatic habitats—creating long-term benefits for biodiversity and rural communities. With over 60,000 acres under management, we’ve already restored 120+ miles of waterways, reducing sediment and agricultural runoff while enhancing fish habitats and water quality. Our work was recently featured in Tomorrow’s Catch by the American Fisheries Society and Content With Purpose, highlighting how forest restoration supports sustainable fisheries across North America. By partnering with local communities and converting degraded farmland into thriving forests, we’re building healthier landscapes—one acre at a time.

  • Norb and Kathy Krusiec have owned their farm in Mineral Point, Wisconsin for 55 years, managing over 200 forested acres. Initially in poor condition, they prioritized land conservation with contouring, grass waterways, and habitat programs like the Monarch Butterfly Project, which promotes flowering plants to attract beneficial insects to the land. Today, their land supports thriving ecosystems for all kinds of wildlife, while also contributing to sustainable agriculture and local partnerships. Vegetable gardens produce over 3 tons of fresh food annually; all donated to Madison-area food pantries—an effort they sustained for 20 years without outside funding. Since becoming Forest Carbon Works members, the Krusiecs now enhance their conservation efforts while generating carbon revenue and increasing long-term carbon storage and sequestration across their woodlands. Chestnut is proud to work with landowners to generate passive income while restoring and sustaining their land’s biodiversity for future generations. Learn more ➡️ https://lnkd.in/ezPyEJA2
