Imagine a world where blindness can be reversed through engineering. That vision became reality thanks to Dr. Mark Humayun, Professor of Ophthalmology, Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine and Biomedical Engineering at USC. Humayun co-invented Argus II; the world’s first FDA-approved artificial retinal prosthesis, often called the ‘bionic eye.’ This revolutionary device can partially restore sight to patients suffering from retinitis pigmentosa, a genetic disease that destroys the eye’s photoreceptors. Surgery is done to place a small electronic device on the patient's retina. Later, the patient wears a camera mounted on a pair of glasses, and a portable video processing unit. Images are taken in through the camera, processed, and then sent wirelessly to the implant in the patient's retina. The implant stimulates the living cells in the retina, and the brain interprets these patterns as light. Over time, the patient learns to interpret the signals from the Argus II to see objects, their surroundings, and in some cases even read large-print text. This is why Dr. Mark Humayun is in The Circuit News Innovator spotlight this week! Earth’s orbit is no longer pristine. Nearly 8,700 live satellites share the void with over 2,000 failed ones, heightening the risk of catastrophic collisions. Enter Dr. Luc Piguet, an engineer, CEO and Co-Founder of ClearSpace, the Swiss-based initiative rewriting the future of orbital safety! Piguet leads a mission that blends engineering with planetary responsibility. Founded in 2018, ClearSpace quickly caught the eye of the European Space Agency (ESA). In 2019, ESA entrusted ClearSpace with a historic first: ClearSpace-1, the inaugural mission to physically remove space debris from orbit. The company will launch its robotic servicer aboard a Vega-C rocket in 2026, marking the dawn of an entirely new chapter in orbital cleanup. This is why Luc Piguet is in The Circuit News Innovator Spotlight this week!
