About us

In 1999, a Kansas farm kid named Rick Malir teamed up with a competition barbeque team, quit his day job, bought an old donut shop, and opened the first City Barbeque. Today we own and operate 54 restaurants in Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois, North Carolina, Michigan, Wisconsin and Georgia, and we’re looking at new markets all the time. Every day, at every restaurant, our teams slow-smoke award-winning barbeque and craft homemade sides and desserts from scratch. Our food has been honored by the Kansas City Barbeque Society (American Royal Invitational World Champion Brisket), Restaurant Hospitality magazine (“More Cowbell,” named one of the country’s best sandwiches), the National Turkey Federation (Turkey on the Menu, Fast Casual category), and by local publications in every market we serve. We also offer personalized, affordable, award-winning catering. We’re so proud to cater folks’ special moments, and our experience can’t be matched: we cater more than 2,000 weddings each year! Our friendly catering team makes every event—from formal wedding receptions to casual backyard get-togethers—flawless and fun. Each City Barbeque joint serves its community by giving back about 10% of pre-tax profits to local charities and non-profits; donating food to community events and food-insecure families; and raising funds for organizations like the American Cancer Society, the Resurrecting Lives Foundation, the FFA, and more. Our team is committed to our values: serving competition-quality barbeque with genuine backyard hospitality; improving ourselves and our processes a little every day; and staying true to our purpose of serving and creating happiness.     We recently hosted our annual Pitmaster Competition at our Columbus, OH Support Center. Each year, leaders throughout City Barbeque apply for our Pitmaster Certification class with the hopes of taking their barbeque and smoking skills to the next level. This round hosted seven Pitmasters from four different states who all went through the nine-month certification process. At City Barbeque, we might not take ourselves too seriously, but we take the quality of our craft very seriously! This certification process is legit, including sessions in our Columbus Test Kitchen, classroom time with the Department of Animal Services at The Ohio State University, a special session with the Shed Brothers from The Shed Barbeque & Blues Joint in Ocean Springs, MS, and a few practice “smoke-off” sessions getting ready for the big day. After nine months of hard work studying competition quality barbeque, they come together in Columbus to prepare and smoke five different items for a panel of six City Barbeque judges. First, second, and third place awards are given for each product with one overall winner from each class. These ladies and gentlemen, now all certified Pitmasters absolutely SMOKED it! I want to thank and congratulate this year’s crew of Pitmasters: Angela Bailey, Seth Band, Tyler Camella, Amber Conniff, Steven Huff, Paul Lowe, and Pete Mahaney. This year’s winner, the Pitmaster taking home the belt – Pitmaster Paul Lowe from our Cary, North Carolina joint! I’m so proud of this team! They go to the joints every day committed to delivering on our purpose of Serving and Creating Happiness! I love this stuff!
