About us
The City of Burien is a vibrant and creative community, where the residents embrace diversity, celebrate arts and culture, promote vitality, and treasure the environment. Burien is a city in King County, Washington, United States, located south of Seattle. Residents and business people alike love the convenience of Burien’s hub location and great connections. Its central location means that jobs and entertainment are convenient, high cost parking problems are elsewhere, and a more relaxed pace prevails in residential neighborhoods. Burien enjoys direct 15-minute access to Seattle by State Route 509, the major entrance to Seattle’s commercial, industrial, and rail district. The Port of Seattle’s bulk and container shipping facilities also lie just west of this route. Tacoma is 30 minutes south of Burien along I-5, Bellevue is approximately the same drive-time away via I-405, and it only takes five minutes from Burien’s downtown to arrive at Sea-Tac International Airport.

Thank you to U.S. Rep. Pramila Jayapal for joining City of Burien and Mountains to Sound Greenway Trust staff, along with Trust for Public Land staff and Forest Stewards, as we highlighted the Green Burien Partnership's impact at Salmon Creek Ravine. In Burien’s own backyard, this 88-acre undeveloped environment preserves some of the natural fir and cedar forest that used to cover the area. It features a stream that flows year-round, a range of wildlife from bald eagles and red foxes to muskrats and ospreys, and even some remnants of the area's logging history if you know where to look. Without a coordinated effort to restore and care for our forests, we are at risk of losing many benefits of these forests and natural areas. The Green Burien Partnership brings the City of Burien together with community members and private and public agency partners to restore and care for Burien’s parks and urban forests. The Mountains to Sound Greenway Trust has partnered with the City of Burien to restore habitat at Salmon Creek Ravine through community partnerships and educational internships. The Greenway Trust and Dirt Corps helped launch Burien Green Teens, an award-winning high school internship program that invites Burien youth to learn about green careers in conservation while earning a stipend. While this program has grown since its pilot year in 2022, it has been paused this year due to the cancellation of federal funds that were supporting it. Healthy forested parks and green spaces have the power to strengthen neighborhoods, provide safe access to nature, and provide many benefits to the environment. Learn more about the Green Burien Partnership at burienwa.gov/GreenBurien. Group photo provided by the office of U.S. Rep. Pramila Jayapal.

Managing Burien’s urban forest supports public safety by staying alert of potential hazards, supporting our current tree canopy, and informing the public of the positive effects trees have in our community. In 2024: 🌳 116 trees were pruned, keeping sidewalks safe. 🌳600+ trees were protected during development, keeping them structurally sound and less likely to fall over in a storm. 🌳 200+ trees were assessed for risk of falling over. Learn more about the Green Burien Partnership at burienwa.gov/GreenBurien.
