About us

We are a city organization that provides city services and support to Martinez’s residents and businesses. City services include public safety, street and park maintenance, recreation, and community development. We think this is an awesome place to live, but not just because of our growing Downtown with a variety of restaurants, shops and breweries, or because of our beautiful open spaces and recreation opportunities, or even because of our gorgeous weather throughout the year. What makes Martinez great is the sense of community that embodies every neighborhood and business in this city. As a family-friendly city, it helps that we have great access to parks with recreation programs, a community pool, several sporting fields and courts. Families who decide to lay roots in Martinez find themselves staying for generations. Businesses who choose Martinez do it because they welcomed into a vibrant hub of makers and hometown innovators. Our history is one that cannot be underestimated. Martinez was established in 1847 and became the home of the County seat in 1850. The famous naturalist John Muir called Martinez home until his passing in 1914. Martinez was also where Hall of Fame baseball player Joe DiMaggio was born. Pretty cool, right? • At its meeting on Wednesday, July 16th, at 7:00 pm, the Martinez City Council and the community will hear from Tucker Sadler Architects, Inc. a San Diego-based architectural planning, design, and development firm, which will present their preliminary conceptual vision for revitalizing the Martinez Waterfront, including the Marina. This firm has decades of experience delivering private and public sector development projects in California and in other states, including waterfront projects. Tucker Sadler’s presentation will be followed by a discussion by the City Council and public comment. We encourage everyone interested in the future of the Marina and Waterfront to attend this meeting, either in person or virtually, and learn more about this potential revitalization. Martinez Regular City Council Meeting Wednesday, July 16, 2025, 7:00 pm Martinez City Hall, 525 E Henrietta Street, Martinez, CA 94553 Zoom virtual meeting link on the agenda at https://lnkd.in/gjCA37NB Constructed in the 1960s, the Marina has exceeded its useful life, with facilities closing due to safety concerns and environmental factors, such as sea level rise causing frequent flooding. Viewed as a unique and valuable community asset, the City Council has expressed a commitment to take measures to ensure it is safe and create a vibrant place for recreation and commerce benefiting residents and visitors alike. The City assumed direct management of the Marina in August 2024 after the previous operator’s contract ended, revealing the need for a comprehensive rebuild rather than costly repairs. Maintaining the Marina has been a financial challenge for the City, which has been subsidizing the Marina for years, a scenario that is no longer sustainable. The Marina threatens to become a financial drain on the City’s general fund if a different course of action is not pursued. “Our City’s Marina is a vital community asset that has faced decades of infrastructure deterioration and increasing financial strain on the City,” said Mayor Brianne Zorn. “An investment in Martinez by a private developer may offer a transformational opportunity to fund a comprehensive plan for our Marina and Waterfront.” At the conclusion of this agenda item, the City Council can consider making a motion to authorize the City to enter into exclusive negotiations with Tucker Sadler, which will enable the parties to develop an agreement on terms, roles, milestones, and deliverables. If an agreement is reached, the City Council and the community will have an opportunity to discuss it in the fall. More information is available on the published City Council agenda for the July 16th meeting at https://lnkd.in/gjCA37NB. • The City is proud to announce a new pilot partnership with the Martinez Community Foundation (MCF) to manage the Community Groups Funding Program on behalf of the City. Through this pilot, the City has allocated initial seed funding of $13,500 and an additional Recycle/Sustainability Fund contribution of $5,000, which MCF will administer using its longstanding grantmaking expertise. “This partnership reflects our shared commitment to empowering community-based solutions,” said Mayor Brianne Zorn. “We know that some of the most effective community groups can make a big impact with limited resources. This program is intended to leverage the capacity of MCF to connect these impactful groups with available funding and resources. Together, we can make an even bigger positive impact on the Martinez community.” “Working with the City on this pilot is an exciting opportunity to reach groups that are closest to the challenges and opportunities in our neighborhoods,” said MCF Board President Stephen Andrews. “We’re proud to help amplify their efforts and remove barriers to participation.” On July 8, 2025, from 10am-12pm, MCF will host a pre-application workshop at the Martinez Yacht Club, 111 Tarantino Drive, Martinez. The pre-application workshop will provide prospective grantees with an overview of eligibility requirements, application assistance, selection process information, and reporting requirements. • In partnership with Contra Costa Water District and Sustainable Contra Costa, the City recently hosted a sheet mulching educational workshop for Public Works staff to convert the lawn by the City Hall Annex to a native landscape. City staff were joined by staff from Contra Costa County, the City of Antioch, and the City of Concord to learn about sheet mulching as a process to remove non-functional turf and build up healthy soil. Compost was donated by Republic Services and mulch was donated by Ecomulch. In the fall, the City plans to plant a drought-tolerant garden. Thanks to all of our partners and staff involved in this project! #sheetmulching #martinezgoesgreen #workshop #training
