About us
Coleman Advocates believes that all children and families deserve access to high-quality education, living wage jobs, family-supporting benefits, affordable housing, and a voice in the decisions that affect us. Since 1975, Coleman Advocates has pioneered programs and policies to expand opportunity for San Francisco’s children, youth and families, Many of these hard-won programs and policies have served as models adopted by communities all over the country. Coleman currently focuses on building more effective, equitable, and supportive public schools in San Francisco and beyond. We believe the transformation of our educational system requires the involvement of the entire community—not just teachers, school administrators, and politicians. Our organizational model has evolved over the years and today combines the development of rigorous policy proposals and implementation plans with deep community engagement and leadership development involving youth and parents. While we work to increase opportunity for all young people in San Francisco, our primary focus is fighting to advance rights, safety, and full inclusion of low-income people of color. We know that quality education is key to future economic security, individual well-being, and social participation. San Francisco is considered a liberal bastion, but the racial achievement gap and the racial opportunity gap indicate how far we still need to go to achieve true equity.

We’re proud to join @SFUnified and @SparkSFPublicSchools in launching the Be Here! campaign—a citywide effort to boost student attendance and foster school belonging.🥳 Research shows that missing just two days of school each month can set students back—whether it’s a kindergartener building critical grade-level reading skills, a 7th grader keeping up with core math concepts, or a 10th grader staying on track to graduate. This is our city. These are our schools. Let’s help every student start and finish the year strong! Join the campaign: https://lnkd.in/g73gRe5i #BeHereSF #OurCityOurSchools #GoPublic!

We're turning 50! Celebrate with us by dancing your night away at our 50th Birthday Benefit Concert! Live performances by Rocky Rivera (@rockyrivera), Luna the Blooma (@lunatheblooma), Inside Voices (@therealinsidevoices), CBbackinaction (@cb_backinaction) and more! We also have amazing local vendors lined up for you to snack on and refuel from all the celebrating. When? Saturday, September 13, 2025, 5:30pm Where? SOMArts, 934 Brannan St., San Francisco Why? Coleman Advocates for Children & Youth began reimagining youth and education justice in San Francisco in 1975 and is one of the oldest child advocacy organizations in the country. A three-year-old in an isolation cell in San Francisco's Juvenile Hall sparked Coleman's courageous founder, Jean Jacobs, to begin a lifelong campaign to help children in the juvenile justice and foster care systems. Since then, we have worked on countless resolutions and campaigns that put our youth and their families at the forefront of all elected officials’ and the city’s priorities. Our mission remains to make San Francisco a city of hope, justice, and opportunity for all children and their families by creating just and equitable schools and building the leadership capacity of our most vulnerable communities. So, we’re celebrating a 50-year legacy as well as looking towards the future of what education equity and youth justice can be. Tickets start at $35 and will go up to $50 on 8/15, so buy your tickets today! This event is 18+. For questions, please email ycamacho@colemanadvocates.org. YMAC and PMAC joined forces this summer and truly embodied what we mean by intergenerational work. Both programs co-worked with each other to better understand each other's perspectives. Our YMAC Fellows planned and facilitated activities to get members moving outside and creative inside. They created agreements and non-negotiables together to allow for equity in voice and to foster trust and respect. Most importantly, they grew together and are excited to continue into the 2025-26 school year. Keep an eye out for more, as our Member Leaders have been hard at work this summer.
