We attended the AI Action Summit last week. Our panel and conversations revolved around three central points: 🤝 Civil society matters, and must continue to be included. Without civil society, there can be no public interest. 👥 The importance of openness in AI. A shift from CC BY to CC BY-NC-ND is not the answer. 🧠 Local solutions for local contexts, local content, and local needs. A one-size-fits-all approach does not exist. Want to learn more? Read our blog post below from Anna Tumadóttir: https://lnkd.in/egC2nwQM

Great conversations today at the Universiteit Utrecht Library during the symposium “Authors and Rights in Publishing: Perspectives on Contracts, Licenses, Rights Retention, AI, and TDM” where I had the pleasure to talk about the importance of #TDM for research, the #copyright implications of TDM especially in the context of the EU #AIAct, and Creative Commons’ work on preference signals as a means for people to express their wishes on the use of their works for #AI training.

We shared our thoughts about global #AIGovernance at the #AIActionSummit today in Paris. We firmly believe that openness in AI is critical, and that open solutions empowered by #reciprocity will lead to great public benefit. Read more from our CEO Anna Tumadóttir ⬇️
On behalf of Creative Commons (CC) I had the opportunity to speak about global AI governance on a panel at the AI Action Summit today, attending alongside my colleague Brigitte Vézina. We reiterated the importance of centering both people and planet in any intergovernmental or public-private dialogs as we think about what suitable frameworks for governance in AI are. Let’s not forget different needs for different contexts, and there is no one size fits all. It was also an opportunity to highlight some of the lessons of CC’s origins, and some of the challenges that open practices now face in an age of AI. We firmly believe that openness in AI is critical, and that open solutions will lead to greater public benefit. At the same time, we need to get far more vocal about the need for reciprocity from those who disproportionately benefit from the commons. What incentive do people have to share today when they aren’t comfortable with how their works may be used? How can they participate in the AI ecosystem in ways that feels sensible and beneficial to them? The hesitation to openly share is being seen across sectors, from science to cultural heritage and beyond. We need to work together on data governance models that combine openness with preferences for reuse, so that sharing feels mutually beneficial in the age of AI. It’s going to be a busy year, folks. Grateful to Henri Verdier and colleagues for managing a balanced attendance for civil society the summit. P.S. There is of course more nuance to this discussion than can possibly fit on a panel, or in a LinkedIn post. We’ll keep talking about these topics on the CC blog in the months to come. #AIActionSummit #Commons #DataGovernance #Reciprocity
