🌐 Shaping the Future of Trustworthy AI: Global Experts Convene at Seoul National University On May 20-21, 2025, Seoul National University hosted the 3rd Z-Inspection International Conference, drawing over 50 experts from ethics, medicine, law, and technology to explore one of the most urgent challenges of our time: How do we ensure AI is truly trustworthy? Organised by the Trustworthy AI Lab at Seoul National University ( https://lnkd.in/dCizAiRk ) in collaboration with Merck and the Z-Inspection® initiative, this global event highlighted the growing momentum behind interdisciplinary approaches to ethical AI development. Among the distinguished participants was Dr. Rainer Wessely, Counsellor for Digital & Research at the Delegation of the European Union to the Republic of Korea, who contributed to the discusion into the evolving landscape of AI governance and international cooperation. Key topics discussed included: - How to assess Trustworthy AI in practice - The tension between AI regulation vs. AI innovation - The role of AI in education - The importance of AI certification - Broader impacts of AI on society - AI governance and differing world viewpoints Experts emphasised the value of scenario-based evaluation - examining AI systems not just by design, but also by intent, deployment context, and real-world consequences. The conference also showcased Merck's internal Digital Ethics Framework, focusing on autonomy, transparency, fairness, and the maximisation of human benefit. 🌐 Now Online: Summary of the EU–Republic of Korea Digital Partnership Stakeholders Roundtable 🇪🇺 🇰🇷 ✍ The summary of the EU–Republic of Korea Digital Partnership Stakeholders Consultation Roundtable, held on April 29, 2025, is now available. ⚡ This Stakeholders roundtable, co-organised by the European Commission and the Korea's Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT), with support of the Digital Partnerships in Action (DPA) project, marked the first structured dialogue of its kind under the EU–ROK Digital Partnership, established in 2022. Over 115 participants from government, industry, academia, and civil society engaged in strategic conversations on advancing bilateral cooperation across six key digital domains: Semiconductors, Quantum Technologies, Cybersecurity, Data Governance, Artificial Intelligence, and 5G/6G Connectivity. 🗝️ Key takeaways include: - Strong commitment to regulatory convergence and standard harmonisation - New momentum for joint innovation platforms and SME support - Sectoral insights on AI safety, quantum R&D, secure data spaces, and more The roundtable reinforced the mutual digital sovereignty goals of the EU and South Korea. 🇪🇺 EU and 🇯🇵 Japan reinforce tech and digital partnership! The EU and Japan held their third Digital Partnership Council on 12th May in Tokyo to reinforce tech and digital cooperation between the EU and Japan. The Council was co-chaired by Henna Virkkunen, Executive Vice-President for Tech Sovereignty, Security and Democracy, alongside Masaaki Taira, Minister for Digital Transformation, Masashi Adachi, State Minister of Internal Affairs and Communications and Shinji Takeuchi, Parliamentary Vice-Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry. In the face of current global geopolitical uncertainties, the EU and Japan reaffirmed the growing importance of their partnership. They recognise the need to boost their competitiveness and promote a values-driven approach to global digital governance. Additionally, they aim to bolster their economic security by fostering resilience in critical digital technologies. Building on the successful implementation of their Digital Partnership, they reviewed the advancements made since the second Digital Partnership Council in 2024 and agreed to further cooperate on core digital technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), 5G/6G, semiconductors, high performance computing and quantum technology. They will also strengthen their collaboration on data governance and online platforms, submarine cables, Arctic connectivity, digital identities, trust services, and cybersecurity. The fourth Digital Partnership Council is planned for 2026, in Brussels. As Henna Virkkunen, Executive Vice-President for Tech Sovereignty, Security and Democracy stated "Today we have reinforced the already strong EU-Japan digital partnership. Deepening our work on core technologies to ensure mutual competitiveness is now more important than ever. 🇪🇺 EU and 🇯🇵 Japan strengthen Research and Innovation cooperation in quantum science and technology ✍ On 13 May 2025, in Tokyo, the Executive Vice-President for Tech Sovereignty, Security and Democracy Henna Virkkunen and the Japanese Minister of State for Science and Technology Policy Minoru Kiuchi signed a Letter of Intent on Strengthening Cooperation in the Area of Quantum Science and Technology. ⚡ The Letter of Intent seeks to enhance cooperation between the European and Japanese quantum science and technology stakeholders. It is one of the concrete deliverables under the EU-Japan Digital Partnership established in May 2022 and is building further on the longstanding EU-Japan cooperation in science and technology.
