Thrilled to share this new video by James Butcher which uses Dimensions to analyze research output trends over the past 25 years 📈 👉 https://lnkd.in/ephFEDX4
I help editors and publishers create impactful journals. Now: Journalology. Previously: Vice President, Nature journals; Executive Editor, The Lancet.
Research article output increased rapidly over the past 25 years. Why? To find out, watch this video, which has just gone live: https://lnkd.in/ephFEDX4 The graphs in the attached document are the start of the story to whet your appetite. There's a lot more to see in the video. The first 17 minutes contain the analysis. The second half explains how I used Dimensions (from Digital Science, which supported the video) to create the graphs. The take home messages are: ➡️ The number of research articles indexed by Dimensions increased from ~900k in the year 2000 to 4.2m in 2024 (CAGR = 6.6%). ➡️ The rapid increase between 2019 and 2021 (CAGR 10.8%) was likely due to a combination of factors: the Covid pandemic, the rise of China, the adoption of Gold and Hybrid OA models, and paper mills. ➡️ The number of research articles published in fully OA journals (“Gold”) fell by -1.6% in 2024 compared with 2023. "Hybrid" fell by -12%. "Closed" increased by +34%. ⚠️ N.B. This is an early view of the 2024 data and those numbers will likely change over time. Watch the video to understand a very important caveat about how to interpret the Gold / Hybrid / Closed 2024 data. Finally, can you guess which subject area grew the fastest in the past 10 years? The answer can be found at the 19:28 mark. Please leave your thoughts and comments about the analysis below. #scholarlypublishing #academicpublishing #openaccess P.S. My 7-year-old son says: "Make sure you smash the like button and don't forget to subscribe". Bless him. Maybe now that his old man is a YouTuber he'll finally think I'm cool? No? That's what I thought....

Great to see Taylor & Francis Group using Dimensions on GBQ to explore the impact of research in LMICs. By combining internal data with Dimensions data, they’ve been able to uncover valuable insights into how research is driving social justice and real-world change. Check out their findings 👇
Low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) are home to 85% of the world's population but produce just 0.2% of researchers, so increasing these numbers is crucial. We’re committed to development initiatives that support librarians, authors, and researchers in low- and middle-income countries, and work with organizations such as Research4Life, whose mission is to “build an inclusive, diverse, and equitable scholarly communications environment.” Our Research and Analytics Manager Tiffany Drake, along with Sustainability Manager Catherine Hodgson, found 4,500 articles, published by researchers from Research4Life countries in the past 4 years, affiliated with an Education institute, that cited at least one pay-to-read Taylor & Francis article from a journal to which Taylor & Francis provides Research4Life access. Learn more in “How our partnership with Research4Life is impacting research in LMICs”: http://spr.ly/6049v0q8J Read more about the work we’re doing to support researchers in low- and middle-income countries: http://spr.ly/6043v0q83 #ResearchImpact
