We're live from #COP30 in Brazil 🎥 Today marks the first official day of the UN climate summit, and Sam Jackson, our Director of Climate Science, is on the ground in the Belém bringing you updates as they happen 🇧🇷 Before heading to the summit, Sam and the team spent several days at the Manoa REDD+ project in Rondônia. This carbon avoidance project protects against deforestation, preserving vast areas of carbon-rich tropical forest deep in the Amazon rainforest. The scale of forest destruction surrounding the protected area is incredibly heartbreaking, and highlights the importance of supporting projects such as these. As leaders gather for #COP30 in Brazil, the world stands at a crossroads 🌎 Seven of the nine planetary boundaries have now been breached, pushing Earth’s life-support systems closer to dangerous tipping points. Home to both the Amazon and the Atlantic Forest, Brazil’s ecosystems are vital to global climate stability. Yet on the ground, the challenges are stark: from intensifying droughts to extreme flooding and rising fire risks. The Atlantic Forest alone has lost more than 75% of its original cover, making it one of the most degraded tropical forests on Earth. 🌳 Can you offset carbon by planting trees? The answer isn't as straightforward as you'd think. Planting trees is an incredible way to restore ecosystems, support biodiversity, and build climate resilience. But here's the reality: it cannot always be used for carbon offsetting. For a project to count as a carbon offset, it needs to meet strict criteria - measured, verified, and certified under recognised standards. Most tree planting projects can't guarantee this, especially in their early years. That's why at Ecologi, we don't class tree-planting as carbon offsets. Instead, we celebrate it for what it truly is: a vital part of long-term climate action.
