EPRI convened its Advisory Council in Dublin last week for several days of productive discussions and collaboration with leaders across the energy sector.⚡ The Advisory Council is a key pillar of EPRI’s public benefit mission, bringing together representatives from regulatory, academic, environmental, and scientific organizations, as well as the finance and business sectors, to help guide EPRI’s research priorities and ensure they serve the public interest. Discussions explored how data centers can support grid reliability and community resilience. Members also toured the Heatworks District Heating Energy Centre, part of the Tallaght District Heating Scheme, which showcases the reuse of data center waste heat to meet local heating needs through district heating networks. EPRI also heard member perspectives on future research priorities and related topics and shared insights from the Energy Wallet white paper, which focuses on advancing energy affordability and customer empowerment (https://ow.ly/EUzI50XemNt). EPRI extends its appreciation to all Advisory Council members and partners who contributed to these valuable discussions, including South Dublin County Council, EPRI Europe, and the Heatworks team (heatworks.ie) for their collaboration and leadership. 🤝

𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗼 𝗺𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴? EPRI’s latest Energy Central article by Karen Tapia-Ahumada explores how temporal and spatial resolution in long-term resource planning models can impact the outcomes for energy storage deployment. From simplifying hourly load data to representing transmission networks, planners face critical trade-offs that affect the amount of storage built, its type, and its location. This article examines how various modeling strategies can yield significantly different outcomes, especially when comparing long-duration versus short-duration storage technologies. 📊 Key insights include: • Why higher temporal resolution favors longer-duration storage • How spatial detail helps pinpoint optimal deployment locations and timing • What planners should consider when balancing model complexity and practicality 📘 Read the full article on Energy Central: https://lnkd.in/ej-mX6Hw

As energy demand surges, maximizing transmission capacity is critical to keeping pace. Today, EPRI is launching a new five-part series, 𝘗𝘰𝘸𝘦𝘳𝘧𝘶𝘭 𝘗𝘢𝘵𝘩𝘸𝘢𝘺𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘛𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘴𝘮𝘪𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘯, exploring transformative technologies that can unlock large-scale grid capacity. First up: 765kV. ⚡ With 5x the loading capability and proven reliability over long distances, 765kV is a powerful option for regional and interregional transmission. As utilities face growing demand from data centers, extreme weather, and interconnection growth, 765kV is re-emerging as a strategic solution-with nearly 5,000 miles of new lines approved across ERCOT, MISO, PJM, and SPP. EPRI's Lenox Laboratory has been testing high-voltage transmission systems, including 765kV, for several decades, helping utilities validate performance and accelerate adoption. Discover how this technology is being deployed today and what's needed to scale it for tomorrow. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/eKSy5n9D

EPRI and Saudi Electricity Company (SEC) collaborated to implement a 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵-𝗳𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲-𝗶𝗻-𝘁𝗵𝗲-𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗽 (𝗛𝗜𝗟) 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺 at SEC’s R&D Center in Dhahran.⚡ The innovative platform enables safe & efficient testing of advanced protection relays in a stimulated environment, without connecting to the live grid. It’s faster, safer, and more cost-effective, while also building local expertise in the energy sector. This technology supports SEC’s efforts to upgrade protection systems for a critical series-compensated transmission corridor. Leveraging EPRI’s global research network, the first HIL approach demonstration took place at an New York Power Authority (NYPA) lab. EPRI then tailored the platform, conducted trainings, and facilitated the technology transfer. SEC now independently applies the platform to validate the performance of protection relays under realistic fault conditions. The result? Reduced outage risks, lower costs, and accelerated deployment of new technologies. This project received a 2024 EPRI Technology Transfer Award, recognizing the successful collaboration among SEC, EPRI, and NYPA. 🏆 🔗 Read the full #EPRISuccessStory: https://lnkd.in/eViJCEzu
