About us
The European Union Science Diplomacy Alliance is a collaborative initiative launched by the Horizon 2020 science diplomacy projects S4D4C, InsSciDE and EL-CSID to sustain and grow the networks, impact and momentum consolidated by the three projects. It aims to further develop, maintain, and organise joint research projects, policy advice, capacity building and training activities on the topic of science diplomacy. The Alliance is grounded in the results and networks fostered by the three projects and aims at sustaining the dialogue on EU science diplomacy and cultivating new opportunities to progress theory and practice of science diplomacy in Europe. It facilitates interactions and dialogue, training, institutional capacity building and coordination of grant-seeking or use of joint funding, if available.

Last week, I had the opportunity to speak about tech diplomacy during the EU Science Diplomacy Alliance Coffee Chat. Main takeaways and overview of recent scholarship 👇 But first 🙏 thank you to the EU Science Diplomacy Alliance for the opportunity and thank you to the participants for a great discussion. It was also a chance to further support the work of the EU SD Alliance's Thematic Entry Point on “Science, Technology, Innovation Diplomacy (STID) and Gender Equality (GENDER)” that I run together with the wonderful Theodota Lagouri. https://lnkd.in/eYsGEdzD The main takeaways from the discussion: 💡 Entrepreneurship and innovation are diplomatic instruments: Countries need to support their innovation ecosystems. Science and tech diplomacy has a huge contribution to make. In turn, entrepreneurs can support diplomatic efforts. 💡 Infrastructure matters: Digital technology is underpinned by physical infrastructure (e.g. servers, undersea cables, satellite networks, etc.). Science and tech diplomacy needs to pay more attention to this. 💡 A historical perspective is essential: The emergence of tech diplomacy is not the first time that powerful private sector actors have had a huge impact on international relations. What lessons do we learn? 💡 Clarifying terminology sharpens both the theoretical and the practical toolbox: What are the commonalities and differences between ”science“ and ”technology“? To what extent is it helpful to think of science and technology as a continuum? Where do we draw lines? And for what purpose? Special thanks to the following people for asking insightful questions and sharing their perspective: Raluca Coscodaru, Paul Arthur Berkman, Rasmus Gjedssø Bertelsen, 贝牧思, PIERRE-BRUNO RUFFINI. And to Angela Schindler-Daniels for the expert moderation. During my presentation I drew on the recent special issue on tech diplomacy, edited by Corneliu Bjola (University of Oxford) and Prof. Markus Kornprobst (Diplomatische Akademie Wien, Vienna School of International Studies). And in particular the following contributions: 👉 Corneliu Bjola, Markus Kornprobst: Studying Tech Diplomacy—Introduction to the Special Issue on Tech Diplomacy https://lnkd.in/eNWVPYnd 👉 Ilan Manor (PhD): A “Tech First” Approach to Foreign Policy? The Three Meanings of Tech Diplomacy https://lnkd.in/ewPNV-Pb 👉 Katharina E. Höne: Sharing the Same Playground? An Analysis of the Private Sector's Role in Tech Diplomacy https://lnkd.in/eK7g_Q3T 👉 Eugenio V Garcia: Technology for Whom and for What? Check out our new Opinion Article, published together with my highly esteemed co-authors Cedric Invernizzi, Filippa Lentzos, Luk Van Langenhove and @Mary Onsarigo from the National Commission for Science and Technology (NACOSTI). We explore the Biosecurity Paradox - where trust is both the most fragile element of international cooperation and the strongest foundation of global biosecurity. To address this, we call for a focused, coordinated and integrated science diplomacy strategy, built around four priority areas to strengthen biosecurity governance through science diplomacy: 1️⃣ Embedding Responsibility in the Life Sciences 2️⃣ Institutionalising Scientific Advice for the BWC – establishing a scientific advisory mechanism 3️⃣ Regional Leadership as a Catalyst for Biosecurity Capacity – fostering capacity-building 4️⃣ Integrating Strategic Science Communication as a pillar of science diplomacy #ScienceDiplomacy, #BWC, #ResearchPartnerships, #GlobalCooperation, #dualuse, #biosecurity Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute, EU Science Diplomacy Alliance, Spiez Laboratory, GRP-Alliance, Science Diplomacy Capital for Africa, International Biosecurity and Biosafety Initiative for Science (IBBIS), United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research (UNIDIR), Swiss Biosafety Network (SBNet) 👉 Read more https://lnkd.in/eUhaNzSq

A new chapter for Science Diplomacy in Europe begins! This week marks the official kick-off of the #COST Action CA24169 – Science in Diplomacy Network (SiDnet): Implementing Multilateral Policymaking in Intersectoral, Cross-Disciplinary & Strategic Domains, which has been officially launched on the 13th of October in Bruxelles. I am truly honoured to have been elected Chair of the Action by the Management Committee assembly, alongside a remarkable team of Vice-Chair (Francisco Valente Gonçalves), Working Group Leaders, and Core Group members (Science Communication Coordinator: Agusti Solanas; Grant Awarding Coordinator: Darragh McCashin; Training Coordinator: Mostafa Moonir Shawrav; ITC Coordinator: Ali Hassan Sodhro, PhD, Postdoc; Advisory Board Coordinator: Mattia Bellini). Together, we will lead a network of scholars, diplomats, policymakers, and industry experts across Europe and beyond, working to make science a driving force for multilateral collaboration. SiDnet’s mission is clear: To foster a pan-European dialogue on how science diplomacy can strengthen technological sovereignty, tackle global challenges, and foster cooperation, even in the most difficult geopolitical contexts. Our #Network is structured around four Working Groups: WG1 – Diplomacy for Science within #Technological #Sovereignty & #Governance (led by Damiano Fuschi and Maksymilian Kuzmicz) Exploring how international cooperation and governance frameworks can ensure responsible and secure technological development (AI, space, cybersecurity, neurotechnology). WG2 – Science in Diplomacy for #Global #Challenges & #Sustainability (led by Jean-Christophe Mauduit and Svetlana Klessova) Connecting science and policy to address global challenges, from climate change to misinformation, through evidence-based, trust-driven diplomacy. WG3 – Science for Diplomacy via #International #Cooperation in #Geopolitical Contexts (led by Hevda Vinarsky Peretz) Leveraging scientific collaboration to sustain dialogue and cooperation among nations - even amid political tensions - while promoting inclusiveness and ethical standards. WG4 – #Communication, #Dissemination, #Training & #Networking (led by Theodota Lagouri and Alba Gerdeci) Ensuring that SiDnet’s insights reach both policymakers and the public, empowering the next generation of science diplomats through training, dissemination, and engagement. You can learn more and apply to participate as WG member here: https://lnkd.in/dFymUzP5 A heartfelt thank you to all Management Committee members and Secondary proposers for your trust and to the #COST Association for making this ambitious vision possible. The future of diplomacy is interdisciplinary, and together, we are shaping it. (A special thanks also goes to our COST Science officer Rossella Magli and COST Administrative officer Carmencita Malimban) #ScienceDiplomacy #COSTAction #SiDnet #Multilateralism #Policy #Sustainability #GlobalGovernance #ResearchNetwork

#Diplomacy is the heartbeat of international relations. The role of #Science in it is increasingly prominent, in a World confronted with a climate crisis, the recent pandemic and the steady threat of epidemics - among other issues without borders. This applies also to the Africa-Europe relations, in which #ScienceDiplomacy has contributed to building a progressively stronger #partnership on #Science, #Technology and #Innovation. This Cooperation, and the Diplomacy therein, represent a special, growing opportunity for Africa and Europe to look and move forward together, as collaboratively and as equitably as possible. A ‘living’ concrete example of this is the unprecedented, collective endeavour of the #AUEU #InnovationAgenda, first co-developed and now co-implemented by the two Unions, with great and progressively expanding participation of the Stakeholder Community. This earned it the recognition of "Science Diplomacy in Practice" (as remarked by Arete News, for example). The first ever workshop (online and in person, in Brussels) on Science Diplomacy in Africa-Europe relations is happening on Wednesday 22 October (online and in Brussels, 10 am - 4:30 pm) - just the day before the #InnovationFair. Lukovi Seke and I look forward to joining the insightful conversation and listen to eminent speakers from the field, while relating our journey of the past three years with the #AfricaEurope Team, the AU-EU Innovation Agenda Working Group. Come enrich the discussion and ‘doings’ by sharing your experience, aspirations and upcoming initiatives in this space. Register here, by 15 October: https://lnkd.in/ePuJWh_r Please note that the same day will feature also the Africa-Europe #InnovationDialogues (in Brussels and online) organised by the Africa-Europe Innovation Platform - therefore, if you are working on #Research and #Innovation at the Africa-Europe interface, you would need to seriously consider the option of multi-tasking on that day ☺️ ! #PositiveAgenda #MakingItHappen #ItsHappening #TheTimeIsNow
