🎉 What a week for EURATOM METIS! The project hosted its final events to conclude and celebrate the fantastic work, collaboration, and achievements that have taken place over the last five years. 🚀 Here’s a recap: • On Wednesday, the METIS Final Symposium took place where researchers, young professionals, industry gathered to dive deep into seismic hazard assessment, ground motion for engineering, and risk analysis in the context of nuclear installations and more from experts including consortium members and guest speakers. • On Thursday, the METIS Final plenary took place where the final project updates, latest research, and achievements were presented by consortium partners sharing their latest updates, research, and • Yesterday, consortium partners took a trip to Flamanville NPP for a site visit to discover the two Flamanville reactors as well as the EPR for a truly inspiring day! The METIS project focuses on research in seismic nuclear safety, specifically to develop and improve tools and methodologies employed in seismic safety assessments of nuclear reactors and translate this research into practice for industry use. 👏 Thank you to all those who attended and made this week so memorable, stay tuned, we have more to come! 👏 And that’s a wrap on the EURATOM METIS Final Symposium and what an exciting day it has been! The day was packed with insightful presentations on the METIS project's goals, outcomes, and lessons learned, including a deep dive into seismic hazard assessment, ground motion for engineering, and risk analysis in the context of nuclear installations. Key highlights included: 🔹A look ‘Back to the Future’, recapping previous research before METIS and now seeing where we are with the impressive progress that has been made throughout the project and the METIS case study, opening the door for the next step in future research. 🔹Highlights into earthquake catalogue declustering and aftershock hazard as well as simulation of region-specific ground motions at bedrock and ground motion for engineering and fragility, including intensity measure. 🔹Insights into the practical new PRA tools, specifically SCRAM_NG & SCRAM++ and the considerations of aftershocks in seismic probabilistic risk assessment. 🔹A deep dive into the challenges of seismic hazard assessment for site evaluation of nuclear installations as well as concepts for maintaining a seismic PRA, looking beyond Euratom with concepts for maintaining seismic PRA in the USA and Japan. A huge thank you to all the presenters and attendees for making the METIS Final Symposium a success! 💡 The EURATOM METIS Spring School recently wrapped up a successful week on Aegina Island 🇬🇷 at the end of April, focusing on bolstering nuclear safety through advanced seismic assessment. Hosted by METIS Consortium partners Dimitrios Vamvatsikos and Angeliki Gerontati National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), the school focused on bolstering nuclear safety through advanced seismic assessment. Highlights included practical sessions on OpenQuake, insights into earthquake patterns (ETAS model), seismic design for nuclear structures, and the influence of site effects. Participants also explored probabilistic risk analysis and the resilience of nuclear power plants.
