"No realm of life is free from threats or hostile behaviour today." Executive Vice-President Henna Virkkunen and High Representative & Vice-President Kaja Kallas present strong measures to enhance the security of submarine cables. Read the article and press release below ⬇️
🔈 Communication cables carry 99% of the inter-continental internet traffic. #Subsea electricity cables are essential to ⚡ energy security. Protecting this critical infrastructure is essential. With the Joint Communication of the 🇪🇺 European Commission and HR/VP Kaja Kallas to strengthen the security & resilience of submarine cables, the #EU is beefing up its subsea #security. These strong measures will bolster: ✔️ PREVENTION: stepping up security requirements & ⚠️ risk assessments on submarine cables, while prioritising funding for the deployment of new and smart cables, increasing redundancies, hence resilience. ✔️ DETECTION: earlier alerts means more effective responses. We will enhance threat-monitoring capabilities per 🌊 sea basin – such as the Mediterranean or the Baltic Seas – to reinforce situational awareness. ✔️ RESPONSE & RECOVERY: through a more efficient EU-level crisis framework, the 🇪🇺 will ensure swifter action and repair of damaged cables. ✔️ DETERRENCE: enforcing sanctions against hostile actors and the ‘shadow fleet' is key to ⛔ deter adversaries. The EU will make full use of its toolbox to address hybrid campaigns – including by fostering ‘cable diplomacy’ with 🤝 global partners. In recent weeks and months, submarine cables incidents have risked causing severe disruptions in essential functions and services in the EU – impacting the daily lives of 🇪🇺 citizens. This initiative responds directly to these threats.
