Everyone deserves to eat. Yet while Big Ag companies rake in profit, farm and food system workers doing the backbreaking work of feeding America aren't being paid enough to feed their families. An estimated 52-82% of farmworkers are food insecure. https://lnkd.in/gvupMVxa The SNAP crisis spotlights a core problem: the dominant food system works for corporate profits, not people.

Fighting for a food system that centers communities, workers & the environment — NOT corporations.
About us
FarmSTAND fights back against the corporations that dominate all aspects of our food system — exploiting animals and the environment, as well as workers and consumers, especially people of color. We work in courtrooms and communities to transform the food system while holding corporations and government leaders accountable. Our network of attorneys and legal partners has filed dozens of cases across every movement sector and area of law, securing important victories. By winning cases, partnering with communities, and holding corporations accountable, we can create a food system that works for people and the planet. When 4 huge meatpackers control 80% of the country's beef supply, we have a problem that importing more beef can't fix. Corporate consolidation in the food system hurts consumers, ranchers, and workers while making a few corporations richer. https://lnkd.in/gUznEY5u

Another Big Ag effort to weaken regulation against extreme animal confinement has failed. Measures like Massachusetts' Question 3 and California's Prop 12 benefit animals, workers, public health, and independent farmers. https://lnkd.in/gSEXw62N We authored an amicus brief to SCOTUS explaining how among other benefits, Prop 12 protects the health of workers and their communities. When Big Ag and food corporations make climate promises they know they won't keep, that's greenwashing. Nestle is just the latest to prove we can't trust corporations to do the right thing. https://lnkd.in/g8RfKnVC We need to hold Big Ag accountable misleading claims about their climate impacts. That's why FarmSTAND is fighting greenwashing in court, including with our recent amicus brief to the 9th Circuit defending California's climate disclosure laws. https://lnkd.in/gyj86EnY

The Trump administration's move to dramatically increase low-tariff imports of Argentinian beef is just the latest example of the federal government undercutting small ranchers while playing into the hands of Big Ag. The federal government has been prioritizing Big Ag and helping them take over more and more of the market for years. One example is the checkoff — a tax on all producers that ends up supporting the Big Ag companies that threaten to put independent farmers and ranchers out of business. This deal with Argentina isn't an anomaly. It's part of a larger system that rewards the biggest players and puts corporate profits above the needs of our communities. Read more about how the checkoff stacks the deck against small ranchers in our Checkoff Deep Dive ➡️ https://lnkd.in/g6nbVauS

According to a new report, the methane emissions of the world's most biggest meat and dairy companies are higher than those of the entire EU and the UK. Big Meat and Dairy often get a pass when it comes to climate impacts, but we cannot address the climate crisis without holding these companies accountable. They turn record profits while polluting our air and water, and then try to get out of responsibility when their greed costs us our lives, homes, and health. Thank you to Foodrise, Friends of the Earth U.S., Greenpeace Nordic, and Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy for compiling this incredibly important report. Getting injured on the job should not mean losing the ability to provide for your family, even if the worker is undocumented. We're representing the Michigan Immigrant Rights Center, who sued the state over its discriminatory and illegal policy of denying undocumented workers their workers' compensation. The state's argument is based on "timeliness," or the idea that since they have gotten away with it for so long already, they should be able to get away with it indefinitely. “Justice for undocumented workers who keep their neighbors housed and fed is at stake, and so are the rights of all Michiganders to challenge their state’s illegal conduct in court,” David Muraskin, Managing Director for Litigation at FarmSTAND. Because of the government shutdown, the Trump administration has furloughed the USDA's Packers and Stockyards division, a key office that protects farmers against corporate abuses and anti-competitive practices. Farm disaster relief and conservation payments are also on hold, as well as federal farm loans, including Trump's promised bailout for commodities farmers. At every level, this shutdown and this administration's policies all year are making it harder for small farmers to operate, while Big Ag continues without oversight. A new study has proven that E. coli can be spread through air pollution from factory form cattle feedlots, which may have been the cause of the 2018 outbreak that killed 5 people and led to illness in 210. There is a huge loophole in the food safety system that prevents the FDA from investigating pathogens that may have led to food-borne illnesses on factory farms. Exceptions like these allow Big Ag to get away with endangering our health, all because they're worried their profits may suffer if they're forced to take responsibility. We just submitted an amicus brief in support of California's SB 253 because we believe Big Ag should have to be transparent about their climate impacts. SB 253 forces businesses to honestly disclose their emissions data. Corporations know that customers value sustainability, but instead of changing how they do business, they use tricks like obscuring their data or moving the goalposts on self-imposed "climate commitments" to greenwash their activities.
