Funga uses aboveground measurement to calculate additional carbon storage, but what about soil carbon? Our answer: Right now, it is straightforward to calculate aboveground carbon sequestration by monitoring wood volume. While we know that carbon is also stored in the soil, quantifying the belowground carbon is far more complex, and science is still in the process of developing reliable, cost efficient methods to do this. For now, it's exciting to think that even more carbon (of some still-mysterious amount) is also accruing belowground, in addition to the aboveground wood biomass we can rigorously measure and verify. Harnessing forest fungal networks to address the biodiversity and climate crises.
About us
At Funga, we use the forest fungal microbiome to improve forestry outcomes and address the climate crisis while enhancing beneficial microbial biodiversity. We combine modern DNA sequencing and machine learning technology with breakthrough research on the forest microbiome to put the right native, biodiverse communities of mycorrhizal fungi in the right place. This leads to more quality wood created more quickly, more carbon sequestered, and more resilient forest ecologies.

Spot on and thanks for the mention, Renoster! “...There’s no single, clear definition for IFM. Instead, it’s a spectrum of context-specific practices that can look completely different depending on where you are" At Funga, we focus on restoring forest soil microbiomes in the Southeast U.S. to enhance carbon sequestration in aboveground biomass. It’s one tool among many in the "improvement" kit, tailored to the needs of our specific land partners and the forests they care for. To learn more about our carbon project, go to: https://lnkd.in/gr_XYVjY
Our new forest carbon program, Apollo, is launching with a focus on Improved Forest Management (IFM) projects in the U.S. state of Maine. Since IFM can mean various things depending on the place, we wanted to unpack what it actually is. What is Improved Forest Management (IFM), really? It’s one of the most widely used, and often misunderstood, terms in the carbon world. “Improved forest management” sounds simple: you’re improving how forests are managed. But what does “improvement” actually mean when every forest, ecosystem, and region has its own challenges? That’s the confusing part - there’s no single, clear definition for IFM. Instead, it’s a spectrum of context-specific practices that can look completely different depending on where you are: 🌳 In the U.S. Northeast and Midwest (Apollo’s initial focus), IFM often means selective harvesting - maintaining multi-age forests, thinning competition, and prioritizing long-term forest health over short-term yield. ⛰️ On the U.S. West Coast, IFM might mean fire mitigation - removing excess fuel that has little commercial value, or creating fire breaks and access roads that help prevent catastrophic burns. 🌾 In the U.S. Southeast, where pine plantations dominate, it could mean extending harvest rotations - letting trees grow longer to absorb more carbon and produce higher-value logs. Some groups, like Funga, are even using mycorrhizal fungi inoculations to boost soil carbon and tree growth. 🌴 In tropical forests, it can look like single-tree selection paired with infill planting to maintain biodiversity and continuous regeneration. And sometimes IFM is less glamorous but equally critical, like removing invasive species or managing overabundant deer populations that prevent young trees from growing. All these interventions can enhance carbon sequestration and ecosystem resilience, but they also show why IFM can be confusing and why scrutiny of individual projects is so important. 🔑 In short: IFM isn’t just one practice. It’s a toolbox, and the right tool depends entirely on the forest you’re trying to improve. #improvedforestmanagement #naturebasedsolutions #forestcarbon #carbonprojects

Family landowners could be a vital piece of the climate solution puzzle, but often face barriers to accessing carbon markets. We're proud to announce a new collaboration between the American Forest Foundation (AFF) and Funga is closing this gap! We're empowering families to convert underused agricultural land into high-impact, carbon-storing forests. By leveraging AFF's afforestation expertise and Funga's innovative soil biodiversity restoration, we're not just planting trees—we're maximizing their growth and climate impact from the ground up. A true win for the planet and the people. Reporting live from inoculation season, aka the Funga Superbowl! This is our favorite time of year, when all of our work across growth, ops, and science comes together—and we get to connect millions of seedlings with healthy, native soil microbiomes. The 2025 inoculation tour is in full swing, with six nursery stops on the map. We’re two down so far, and we’ve already inoculated more seedlings than we did during the entire 2024 inoculation season. Big appreciation to the team out in the field making it happen! Flip through to see what a day on the ground looks like this time of year.

We're thrilled to announce our new partnership with Chestnut Carbon to amplify forest restoration and carbon capture! The soil microbiome is the bedrock of any healthy forest, and is especially vital when planting new ones. That's why our belowground restoration is a powerful ally for Chestnut Carbon's work in large-scale forest restoration. By combining our strengths, we're not only planting trees—we're supercharging their growth and carbon storage. This collaboration demonstrates that climate solutions don't have to compete; they can instead amplify one another to create a bigger positive impact. Read more about how we're building healthier, more vibrant forests together in the link below. #ForestRestoration #CarbonCapture #ClimateAction #Partnership #EcosystemRestoration #Funga #ChestnutCarbon
