🌊 New Publication from the FutureLakes Team! 📚 We’re thrilled to share that FutureLakes colleagues have co-authored a new article in Ecological Engineering: "Overcoming financial barriers to ecological restoration – The case of the Marker Wadden." The Marker Wadden, a mud island concept built from local lake sediments, is a central feature of the Lake IJssel complex case study in FutureLakes. This study explores how this innovative Nature-based Solution overcame key financial hurdles—offering valuable insights for future ecological restoration efforts. 👏 Huge congratulations to lead author Lieke M. Hüsken and co-authors Jill H. Slinger, Sacha de Rijk, Mónica A. Altamirano, and Heleen S.I. Vreugdenhil. We're proud to see FutureLakes research contributing to the growing knowledge base on sustainable freshwater systems. 📖 Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/djMYX3X7 #FutureLakes #NatureBasedSolutions #EcologicalRestoration #MarkerWadden #LakeIJssel #Sustainability #EcologicalEngineering

Sobering report from European Environment Agency (link below). This is the reason why FutureLakes and our sister projects were funded... to transform basin management programmes so we can make more progress in restoring European lakes. It should be recognised that there has been some progress but many waters are stalling at moderate status and some in high status are deteriorating... Mission Ocean #MissionLakes #ProtectAndRestoreEuropeanLakes 🏞️ European Environment Agency 🐸 #NatureRestorationRegulation 👊 ProCleanLakes project, EUROLakes, FERRO Project
The ecological status of European Union surface waters continues to decline. Only 39.6% of EU surface waters attained good status, according to our recently published indicator. 🔎 Some river basin districts report that over 90% of waters are below good status – including in Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, northern Germany, Czechia and parts of Lithuania. ✅ By contrast, Spain, Greece, Ireland and Cyprus have the highest share of water bodies in good or high ecological status, alongside some regions in Slovenia, Austria, Slovakia and Italy. Restoring Europe’s waters requires full implementation of the Water Framework Directive, reinforced by other EU legislation. The new Nature Restoration Regulation is a crucial opportunity to accelerate progress – safeguarding not only our rivers and lakes, but also habitats and species across Europe.
